The Dos and Don’ts of Indoor Climbing

When you go to a climbing gym you should never stand under someone who is climbing!

This is an example of one of the 4 Dos and Don’ts of indoor climbing you will learn about – there are more, but if you get these four down, you are well on your way.

DON’T: Get in the way of other climbers

Never use the crash pads as a chill-out area because they are used to break the falls, and you might just end up under someone who just fell on top of you. The reason people go to the gym is to get a good workout and to train, so don’t distract them too much.

DO: Always support other climbers

You can support other climbers by belaying them or spotting them. Most of the time, when you are climbing a very hard route, you need that extra push to make that hard move.

Telling the person “you can do it” or “don’t give up” could really help the person with the route or the really hard move.

DON’T: give out beta without being asked to

Beta is the information about the climb such as the difficulty, types of holds, and types of movements you could do.

Beta can be very useful, but sometimes it’s fun to just work out the route yourself.

DO: Make friends

Maybe that climber that is always there when you are is really good so if you talk to him or her they could possibly give you advice, and you can become better.

It’s always better to do something like climbing with friends.
