Who is Fernando Botero
Fernando Botero Angulo was born in 19 April 1932.
He is a painter ad sculptor native from Medellín, Colombia.
His work has a mixture of contemporary, figurative, neo-renaissance styles, so popular and unique that that it became a whole new style called “Boterismo”.
He is considered one of the most recognized living artists from Latin America.
In 1948, Botero at age 16 had his first illustrations published in the Sunday supplement one of the most important newspapers in Medellín.
From 1949 to 1950, Botero worked as a set designer.
He moved to Bogotá in 1951.
His first exhibition took place at Galería Leo Matiz in Bogotá.
In 1952, Botero travelled to Barcelona where he stayed for a short time before moving on to Madrid.
In Madrid, Botero studied at the Academia de San Fernando.
He moved to Paris in 1953.
He also lived in Florence, Italy between 1953 and 1954.
In 1958, he won the ninth edition of the Salón de Artistas Colombianos.
In recent decades, he has lived most of the time in Paris.
In 2004 Botero exhibited a series of 27 drawings and 23 paintings dealing with the violence in Colombia. They were all donated to the National Museum of Colombia.
In 2012, he received the International Sculpture Center’s Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award.
Botero has had over 50 exhibits all over the world.
His work is sold for millions of dollars.
Info about Botero Plaza
Botero Plaza is located between Museum of Antioquia and the Rafael Uribe Palace of Culture in Medellin.
The park displays 23 sculptures by Fernando Botero who donated them in 2004.
The sculptures are all made out of bronze.
The “Botero legend” suggests that rubbing the statues brings love and good fortune.
