The 7 Best Things to do in Copenhagen Over the Weekend

You’ve only got a couple of days to explore Copenhagen, what do you do?

Luckily, this city has something for everyone. From food to festivals, to museums and gardens, you’ll leave very impressed.

Without further ado, here are 7 of the best ways to spend your weekend in Copenhagen.

1. Eat Your Fill at the Meat Packing District

First things first – food. Copenhagen is a haven for foodies, and the Meat Packing District is its Mecca.

Based in Kodbyen, the Meat Packing District lives in former warehouses. Follow your nose to the smells of delicious street food vendors and enjoy all it has to offer.

Grab yourself a cold one, sink your teeth into a taco, and feel like a local. If you’re into nightlife, you’re in luck. This area comes alive with vibrant and bustling clubs when night falls.

To nurse that hangover, head over to Prolog for a delicious coffee and fresh croissant.

2. Take Yourself on a Guided Tour

Whether you’re saving the pennies or want to see the place for yourself, take yourself for a tour on foot.

There are so many exciting and beautiful places to explore in Copenhagen. Doing them without the help of a guide can be very rewarding.

This website has a list of self-guided tours you can take around the city. They don’t cost a thing and they’re a great way to explore all the nooks and crannies of the city.

It’s a great activity to do alone or with a friend, so make sure to put it on the list!

3. Go on a Royal Visit

Copenhagen has some beautiful castles and royal palaces to visit. The one you must not miss is the Rosenberg Castle.

Built all the way back in the early 1600s, this palace has hardly changed since. Wander around the gorgeous grounds and gardens before exploring the ornate rooms inside. Each of the rooms is unique and will leave you speechless.

The Danish crown jewels are also held here, so make sure to visit the vaults to see them!

4. Visit the Tivoli Gardens

Often billed as the Disneyland for adults, the Tivoli Gardens are a great way to spend the day. To call it a theme park doesn’t do it justice, there’s so much to see and do here!

The Tivoli Gardens is the oldest theme park in the world. It was build in the 19th century and features representations of the Orient. Wander around the ‘neighborhoods’ to see the Taj Mahal. Marvel at the Asian architecture as you make your way through the different rides.

It’s not only rides this place has on offer. There are so many amazing restaurants, stores and entertainment on every corner. Whether you have kids or not, this place makes for a fantastic day out.

5. Head to the Harbour

Nyhavn is the most famous place in Copenhagen. It’s the colorful houses and harbor you see on every Copenhagen travel guide.

Nyhavn means New Harbour in English. Ever since the 17th century, it has served as a mooring spot for wooden ships. Each side of the canal features colorful and vibrant houses which date back to the 1600s.

For most of its life, Nyhavn was the seedy part of Copenhagen and served as its very own red light district. Now, it is a trendy spot where you can grab a beer or coffee and watch the city life go by.

Make sure to keep an eye out for house numbers 18, 20 and 67. These houses were home to the famous Hans Christian Anderson at different points.

6. Visit the Christiansborg Palace

You’ve seen the royal palace, now it’s time to see the seat of Danish parliament!

This gorgeous building is in Slorsholmen, and it’s the seat of power for the Danish Supreme Court. The Prime Minister’s office is in here, and it plays host to many an official visit.

Take a guided tour around the building and explore the Great Hall, a room which seats up to 400 guests! You’ll also see the Riding School, Royal Kitchens and other museums along the way.

The Christiansborg Palace also features the Royal Theatre. This is a place where Hans Christian Anderson himself once worked.

7. Get Gritty in Christiania

It may be a controversial location, but Christiania is a place you must visit when you come to Copenhagen.

The Free Town of Christiania came to be back in 1971 as a result of a housing crisis in Copenhagen. Squatters took over the old military base and made it into their own society.

The locals here are often fighting with the Danish government for more autonomy. Nonetheless, it’s a fascinating place to visit.

Patterned with vibrant street art, Christiania is a beautiful place to see. It has a quiet park, organic shops and restaurants and artists studios.

It’s very much the definition of a hippy commune. It’s a pretty safe area, but since there is some drug activity here, exercise caution when you visit.

  1. Copenhagen has a buzzing nightlife but with literally hundreds of places to choose, it can be hard to make a final decision on where to go. If you’re planning a trip on the weekend, make sure to visit the bars and live music venues in Kødbyen and around Amor Park in Nørrebro.

  2. Copenhagen is well known throughout the world for its charming breweries, lovely canals, and delectable Danish cuisine. I visited with my family in 2018. It was really a great experience.
