As I get ready for a one-week vacation in Utila in Honduras with my family I realized that even if I travel for work, it has been a while since we have taken a vacation.
That got me thinking about how much people neglect their vacations due to work.
After some research I learned from Vacation Confidence Index, a study conducted by Allianz Global Assistance, that 15% of Americans have not had a vacation in over a year and a whopping 36% haven’t had one in over two years. That is crazy!
How are we, as Americans, only taking 41% of our lawful vacation time that we are entitled to?
If you are one of those people, keep scrolling to find some serious motivation on why you should travel more and take advantage of your hard earned vacation time.
4 Reasons Why You Must Travel More
1. Learn About Yourself
Traveling, especially on your own, is the best way to learn about yourself and what you are capable of.
Being outside of your comfort zone, in a new place, without a support system near you will have you more careful, and your eyes will be much more wide open to things happening all around you.
At the same time, all of the small mishaps are a great way to find out how you react in stressful situations and that is extremely useful.
2. Get to Interact with New Cultures
Sometimes, without even noticing, we live in a bubble. But there are tons of people out there who live differently. You can learn so much about them. And ways we can improve or avoid in our daily lives.
Meeting people from all over the world is, simply said, one of the best ways to enrich our lives.
The world is a kaleidoscope of colorful traditions, outfits, and food to try.
3. Get Better at Your Job
When you feel well rested, relaxed and happy with yourself, you concentrate more, are more creative and even nicer. Therefore, you will be more productive and will contribute to creating a more positive work environment.
This isn’t just good for you but for the company you work for. And recharge those batteries. We are so similar to modern technology. We need to recharge our smart phones and computers. Why aren’t we recharging our own batteries?
It is a win, win situation for everyone.
4. Improve Your Mental Health
There is a thing called vacation deficit disorder.
I’m not making this up! It’s a real thing that affects people who neglect to take their vacation in favor of their career. Not going on vacation or traveling is liked to unhealthy results and depression.
If you haven’t taken a vacation in over a year you are two times more likely to develop depression symptoms.
Convinced you yet? Get out there – travel, recharge and revitalize. It’s not only good for you but everyone around you!
