And out of all the beautiful travel destinations that offer island venues in Australia that we’ve been to, we can honestly say that our Fitzroy Island trip is the one of the most worth it. We had no regrets at all.
For those who are not familiar, Fitzroy Island is one of the crown jewels of Tropical North Queensland. It’s a dreamy island with lush rain forests, long stretches of fine white sand, and a soothing ambience that permeates the landscape.

It’s nestled within the calm blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef so you can explore this natural wonder easily! But that’s just one of the many reasons why we loved Fitzroy Island.
Below are the other reasons why we think you’ll love it and why you won’t regret a thing, too!
1. Ideal location, great weather, stunning landscapes
Fitzroy Island truly has it all. It’s perfectly located in Tropical North Queensland and is surrounded by other top tourist attractions so you can hop around the area and visit local wonders.
Since it’s in Queensland, you don’t have to worry about the weather raining on your parade. The region has great weather all year round so you can visit the island any time of year!
The island is also not that hard to go to. It’s just a 45-minute ferry ride away from Cairns. Once you get there, you’ll be instantly rewarded by the stunning seascapes and lush vegetation of the island.
Unbeknownst to many, 95% of Fitzroy Island is also a protected national park. So you can still explore the rain forest and hike the trails that the island has to offer. This is perfect when you simply want to immerse yourself in nature.
2. Fun activities and adventures
Fitzroy Island is more than just its natural beauty. Aside from taking a ton of IG-worthy pictures with the vast sea as the backdrop, other fun activities await you there.
Below are only some of them:
Underwater fun at the Great Barrier Reef
Fitzroy Island’s proximity to this World Heritage site makes the island an ultimate travel destination. Kids and kids-at-heart will certainly love sailing to the activity area of the Reef and mingling with the underwater animals.
You can either go snorkeling or go scuba diving to explore the Reef’s underwater kingdom! But if that’s not your cuppa tea, you can still enjoy the reef by watching the colorful marine life through the glass-bottom panels on your tour boats.
Reef Fishing
If you want to unleash your inner angler, you can check out Cairns Reef Fishing. They allow tourists to join their charter trips and let them reel in some big fish. Believe it or not, you can catch some mackerel, trivially, or even codfish during your charter trip!
Hiking Trails
As we’ve mentioned earlier, Fitzroy Island is also a national park with lots of hiking trails to explore. Below are your best options if you want to marvel at the island’s rich flora and fauna. If it’s your lucky day, you can spot some rare wildlife along the way!
Lighthouse Trail – this path is a relatively easy trail to take on. It leads to one of the island’s iconic features: the old lighthouse. It’s already dysfunctional but it never fails to charm tourists. So if you’ve never seen a lighthouse before, choose this path.
Summit Trail – as the name suggests, this track will bring you to the island’s highest vantage point. After a grueling hike, you’ll be rewarded by the most picturesque views you’ll ever see in your life: the Great Barrier Reef and the entirety of the island.
