Mackinac Island, MI

Many travelers flock to the coasts when it’s time for a vacation. Still others make the jaunt overseas just to feel like they’re far away from home. Even those who live in the Midwest don’t have to go quite so far to feel like they’ve arrived in distant land when you choose Mackinac Island, Michigan as your vacation destination.

Located on Lake Huron on the northern shores of Lake Michigan, Mackinac Island will transport you back in time. The island is full of beautiful bed and breakfasts and gorgeous gardens, but the most memorable aspect of the island is the fact that no vehicles are allowed. Instead, horse-drawn carriages fill the streets and the clip-clopping of horse hooves fill the air.

Located on the coast of Florida, it’s a beautiful town, but it’s also the oldest. It was founded all the way back in 1565. You can learn about pirate activity in the area, battles that took place, and famous wealthy residents. You’ll even learn something walking the streets, as they’re slightly curved to make firing a cannon impossible.

Off the beaten path The House on the Rock, Spring Green, WI

There are some really strange places in the United States. One of the strangest, but most fascinating, is the House on the Rock located in Spring Green Wisconsin.

At its core, it’s a modern home that was built into a rock by the famous architect Alex Jordan Jr. The infinity room is something you’ll never forget, as it juts out of the side of the rock, into the wilderness, swaying with the breeze.

This tourist attraction has expanded greatly since the house was first built. Walk down a quaint town street indoors in the Streets of Yesterday, or check out the world’s largest carousel. You won’t be able to miss the 200-foot recreation of a sperm whale fighting with a squid!

Off the beaten path Glacier National Park, MT

If you want to reconnect with the outdoors and stay away from other tourists, you have many parks to choose from. Some of the most popular include Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, but there are other national parks that are worth a visit, even if they aren’t quite as popular. It features more than 400 miles of hiking trails tucked away in deep, scenic valleys that will undoubtedly take your breath away. Do a little hiking, bring a tent and camp, or simply drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road for one of the most scenic trips you’ll ever take in your life.

You don’t have to do like everyone else does when it’s time to take your vacation. You can make your vacation your own and do something a little different by trying one of the off the beaten path destinations on this list.
