It’s already well-established that Washington DC is worth at least one trip in your lifetime. As the home of US politics, this District is one of the most well-known in the entire world. It is also full of different tourist spots, from the Washington Monument to the White House itself. And even if you move away from the historical and political aspects of this place, you’ll find some thriving tourist-heavy things to do.
But that’s not the focus of today’s blog; we’re more concerned with where to stay during a trip to Washington DC. Which areas are the best for tourists who might be visiting this place for the first time?

Downtown
First-time visitors will be in for a treat if they set up shop in Downtown Washington DC. Many people see this as the central hub for tourists because, no matter where you stay within this specific area, you’re within walking distance to some of the biggest attractions here. It’s also perfect if you want quick access to the Metro system, as well as putting you close to a lot of restaurants.
If you’re going to base yourself downtown, then hotels will be the best accommodation option. You have so many to choose from – and there are still new hotels arriving every year. You’ll now find one of the newest Arlo hotels in Downtown Washington DC, which brings you access to the fantastic ART DC rooftop bar. If you’re visiting the city for an event or to celebrate something with friends/family, then this is a great hotel to choose, as you can book the rooftop for private parties.
Of course, there are other big hotel chains here, so you can enjoy the confidence and safety of staying somewhere well-known throughout your trip. The one caveat with Downtown is that it tends to be the most expensive place to stay in the city.
Dupont Circle
If you want to embed yourself with the locals, then Dupont Circle is a fine choice for your base camp. It’s a popular neighborhood just slightly north of Downtown, so it still has a buzz about it, but it’s not quite as busy as the main Downtown area. Some people prefer this, and it also has a more authentic feel to it. This is where you’ll find loads of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants mixed in with a few chains.
You also still get amazing Metro access that takes you to all the places you could hope to visit in the city, and it’s one of the most popular destinations for younger travelers or people traveling alone. If you’re interested in testing the nightlife while you’re there, then Dupone Circle is definitely the best place to be.
In terms of accommodation options, you will have a few chain hotels, but it’s mainly filled with smaller, more boutique options. It’s also a great place to rent an apartment for a few days, which can be more affordable and help you live like a local during your stay.

Georgetown
Moving further west of Dupont Circle, you’ll find the beautiful neighborhood of Georgetown. Known by locals as Washington DC’s hidden gem, this area is awash with colorful buildings, cobbled streets, and beautiful local shops. It is far more relaxed than either of the first two options, which could be great if you spend most of your days doing all of the busy touristy stuff. Some people prefer to go back to their accommodation and enjoy peace and quiet while they rest, which is fair enough!
You’ll love Georgetown if you’re a foodie, as it has some of the best places to eat in Washington DC. The restaurant scene here is as good as it gets, and there’s such a lovely charm to the entire place. It’s honestly a must-stay place for any couples who want to enjoy a more relaxed and romantic vibe – or, obviously, for the food enthusiasts who care most about eating!
Metro access is slightly worse than some of the other places you can stay, and accommodation prices are a little bit higher, but you get what you pay for. This is an area with loads of quiet places for you to sleep in, including luxury hotels and really grand guesthouses. So, if you want to live like a king or queen for a few days, this could be the area for you.

Capitol Hill
Arguably one of the most iconic parts of Washington DC, Capitol Hill is home to the Supreme Court of the United States and the United States Capitol building. There are also countless green parks within this area, which contribute to its relaxed and charming atmosphere. You’d think this would be one of the busiest places in the city, but it’s actually rather quiet – especially in the evenings.
There’s a real historical feel to the place, as many of the streets contain buildings that haven’t been changed for decades. You can walk around Capitol Hill a lot and see so many legendary historical attractions – and it’s also not too far from other key attractions, like the White House.
Is this the place to stay if you’re looking for chain hotels and a lot of entertainment? No, but it’s perfect if you’re happy to rent a small apartment or stay in a more independent hotel. You’ll also love it in this area if you’re a big coffee-drinker – Capitol Hill is home to most of Washington DC’s best cafes and coffee shops, which gives you plenty of options for a light lunch or brunch.
Don’t get it wrong, there are other places you can stay during a trip to Washington DC, but these four usually win out as the most popular. A couple of honorable mentions include Adams Morgan and The Wharf, both of which are more energetic and geared towards young travelers who want a thriving nightlife scene. But, with the choices above, you’ve got a great mix of places that each offers something different and can maybe cater to different travelers with specific interests.
