1. You Can’t Drink the Water

After a long day of travel, it may be your first instinct to head to the sink at your accommodation and gulp down a big glass of water.

But remember, that is not an option there. Because of various bacterial infections in the tap water, you need to make sure you only stick to bottled water. Even if you think of yourself as someone with a strong stomach, the tap water there will undoubtedly make you sick.

Luckily, many hotels and hostels are accommodating to this and will provide you with safe drinking water free of charge. Just don’t make the mistake of “chancing it” with the tap water, as you don’t want to spend your entire vacation in bed!

2. Get the Right Documents Beforehand Guatemalan Vacation

Every place has different rules for what a person needs in terms of visas and documentation to enter their country.

For example, in the United States, a French person can enter with a specific travel authorization that will allow them to stay for 90 days. However, this same authorization does not apply to persons from every other country.

The same is true of Guatemala. Most people can travel the country visa free for 90 days. However, it’s always important to check the regulations beforehand, as things could change at any moment.

3. Shared Shuttles are the Way to Go Guatemalan Vacation

In terms of traveling around the country, shared shuttles are the way to go, as they are safe, reliable, and super convenient.

Let’s say, for example, you want to travel from Antigua to Lake Atitlan. All you need to do is head to a tourist agency where you can purchase the ticket directly.

Riding the shuttle couldn’t be easier, as they come directly to your hostel or hotel to pick you up. Plus, the vans are large and the seating is usually quite comfortable.

4. Plan Your Transport from the Airport

More likely than not, you will be flying into Guatemala’s main airport, La Aurora International, located in Guatemala City.

If you land during the day, you should have no problem grabbing a shared shuttle and heading to your desired destination. However, these shuttles only operate during daytime hours, so if you arrive late at night or in the early morning, you will want to pre-arrange your transportation.

Yes, there are usually a few taxis at the airport. But this is not always the case, and you don’t want to be stuck waiting after a long day of flying.

5. Try the Pepian

Every country has its own signature dish, and in Guatemala, it’s Pepian.

Pepian is a thick vegetable stew consisting of local spices, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, and various nuts. It is served with rice, and you have the option between chicken and tofu.

It is a delicious, robustly flavored stew that is often served during Mayan religious ceremonies, and you simply can’t leave the country without trying it.
