Tips to Maintain Your Fitness Routine While Traveling

Building and maintaining momentum with your fitness routine is the key to staying on track. Unfortunately, all it takes is one short vacation or work trip to throw off your schedule – and your workouts. Luckily, there are several simple and effective strategies you can use to keep up the momentum and boost workout motivation, so you can get right back into the swing of things when you get back home.

Book a Hotel With a Gym

Perhaps the easiest way to maintain your fitness routine while traveling is to book a hotel with a built-in gym that you can use as your schedule allows. With access to more of the equipment you’re used to using, you’ll find that the transition between your routine at home and on the road is much smoother. Many hotel gyms come equipped with staples such as a treadmill, elliptical, exercise bikes, and some may even include free weights.

Hotel Room Workouts

Maybe you don’t have a choice in the hotel you stay in, or you’re on vacation at an AirBnB. Whatever the reason, a hotel gym may not always be accessible to you. If this happens, don’t worry! There are plenty of ways to stay fit without having to set foot outside of your hotel room.

YouTube is a fantastic resource for free home workouts, many of which require little to no equipment. If you don’t have the time or space for a full workout, you may opt for some simple bodyweight exercises such as lunges, squats, jumping jacks, planks, or pushups. When it comes to staying on track with your fitness while traveling, the most important thing to remember is that any workout, no matter how simple, is better than nothing at all!

Walk, Jog, or Run Outdoors

If you’ve been stuck in a conference room all day or feel cooped up in your room or rental, getting out and getting some fresh air will do you some good! Find a local park, walk around the property you’re staying at, or walk to a local cafe or shopping center. If you have a more intermediate or advanced workout routine, you may even choose to go for a jog or run around the city or park for a higher-intensity workout.

Come Prepared and Get Creative

It’s easy to get stressed about maintaining your fitness while traveling. The key is to prepare ahead of time and get creative to take advantage of the opportunities and resources that are available to you. Check to see if there are any workout groups or classes taking place while you’re in town that you can join. Maybe there are picturesque running trails nearby that you can enjoy. If not, it may be helpful to pack some basic workout equipment such as a jump rope or resistance bands that can be used virtually anywhere.

You may also want to consider keeping a similar routine as you would at home. For example, if you’re used to waking up at 6:30 am to go for a run, try to keep a similar schedule to avoid falling into old or unhealthy patterns.

No matter what you do, the most important thing to remember is to keep moving. Find creative and efficient ways to use the resources you have to keep the momentum going until you get back home!
