Tips for Taking Your First Trip as a Vegan

Being a vegan is much easier than it used to be. Just a few years ago, options were very limited, and even cooking at home could feel like a chore, never mind eating out. Nowadays, however, the options are varied, and plenty of restaurants serve plant-based menus, making eating out a breeze.

But what about when you are away from home? Veganism isn’t as popular everywhere, and you may worry about how you’ll cope without all of your tried and tested recipes and restaurants. Here are some great tips to help you. 

Do Some Research

Before you travel, make sure you do plenty of research. Find out how popular veganism is at your potential destination andlook for things like vegan restaurants or options on local menus. Research popular dishes and look for any plant-based options.

Talk to Travel Companions

If you are traveling with meat eaters and vegetarians, make sure they know that you’ll be sticking to a vegan diet while you are away and that this might mean looking for alternative places to eat, taking packed lunches on days out, and cooking at your accommodation more. 

Book Accommodation with a Kitchen

Cooking at your accommodation is a great option. You can still eat out but you always have a fallback if needed. Make sure anywhere you book has a kitchen and food storage areas. 

Embrace Local Fruit and Veg

One of the best things about traveling is getting to experience local cuisine and exotic ingredients. While your options might be more limited, there’ll still be plenty of exciting fruit and veg. These also offer a great way to stay hydrated and meet your nutritional needs. 

Always Pack Snacks

Whenever you go out, make sure you’ve got vegan snacks and drinks in your bag, just in case you can’t find much to eat. 

Find the Best Vegan Treats

You will probably focus on getting enough calories and nutrients to support your body on your trip. You’ll focus on filling meals and healthy eating. But a trip isn’t complete without tasty snacks and treats. 

Look out for the sorbet flavors you love at home and pack plenty of your favorite sweet treats to take with you. 

Learn Some Language

It’s always a good idea to learn a little language when traveling to a different country, but make sure this includes things like “Is this vegan?” and “I am a vegan.” To make your life a little easier. 

Get Local Advice

Researching before you go will only tell you so much. When you arrive, ask local people for their advice and recommendations. There might be some great places that aren’t on Google, or they might share some fantastic plant-based recipes you can try. 

Be Patient

Veganism isn’t always that common, and some people might not understand your needs. Try to be patient when talking to people.

Traveling as a vegan can be a challenge. However, it’sprobably still easier than it would have been 10 years ago, and depending on where you are traveling, it might be much easier than you think.
