Things to Do on a Road Trip in Uganda

Compared to its neighbors, Uganda is still off the beaten path which means you get to experience all these insane activities without the crowds. Go canoeing, trek with gorillas, white water rafting and immerse yourself in the eclectic capital city. All you need is to book a Uganda car rental and hit the road to explore the vast country that was nicknamed the Pearl of Africa by early explorers.

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa whose diverse landscape encompasses the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains and immense Lake Victoria. Its abundant wildlife includes chimpanzees as well as rare birds. The remote Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a renowned mountain gorilla sanctuary while the Murchison Falls National Park in the northwest is known for its 43m-tall waterfall and wildlife such as hippos.

Packing a reliable 4×4 vehicle is essential for navigating Uganda’s diverse terrain, from paved highways to rugged park tracks.

Visit Endangered Rhinos

Due to poaching, you won’t spot rhinos in Uganda’s national parks. But the good news is that there are several white rhinos living happily in the expansive Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

The sanctuary was started in 2005 by the rhino reintroduction project, and profits from visitors go towards the breeding programme and their eventual release into the wild! These endangered, magnificent creatures are free to move around on 7,000 ha of land.

Horseback Safari at Lake Mburo

The less known Lake Mburo is the nearest national park to Kampala, making it a good starting point for your safari adventure in Uganda. Since this park has low predator density, it is perfect for engaging in fun and adventurous activities, such as walking safaris, mountain bike rides, and horseback riding. The upmarket Mihingo Lodge offers horseback safaris within Lake Mburo. Their horse stable consists of former racehorses and is beautiful. When horse riding, you get to experience the thrill of getting closer to zebras and other wildlife. They have a limited number of horses and prioritize their guests over visitors. Mihingo Lodge may not always respond to email requests, so it is best to call them if you are looking for a last-minute opportunity.

Visit a Batwa community

The Batwa people dwell near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the far southwest of the country. They are a pygmy group that has lost territory and independence as a result of the nationalization of their ancestral territories to build mountain gorilla reserves and the incursion of modern farming.

Visitors can personally support them by visiting one of their villages and learning about their traditions, beliefs, and way of life. Alternatively, you can embark on a Batwa-guided trip to a cave in the Mgahinga area, where you’ll also learn about their culture and traditions. The Batwa have a distinct cultural identity, and spending time with them is a rewarding experience.

While no group or society should be forced to display its culture in order to exist, the Batwa have lost their traditional hunting areas and rely on tourism revenue to survive. We believe that assisting the Batwa through courteous visits is a useful activity until the day comes when they will hopefully have a better, more sustainable future.

Hike in the Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in western Uganda, are a hiker’s dream. You can go on a small day walks or go on longer, more difficult adventures. Mountaineers can attempt Mt Ngaliema (5,109 m), Africa’s fourth highest summit.

Because the range is distant and little-known, the vegetation in the misty heights of the mountains is uncommon and exotic, and the pathways are calm.

Chimpanzee Trekking

If you’re seeking an extraordinary primate experience, look no further than chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, one of the country’s top attractions. This isn’t just a safari; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage with our closest living relatives in their natural habitat.

Kibale Forest National Park stands out as the premier destination for this adventure, boasting over 1,500 chimpanzees, the largest population in Uganda. However, your options don’t end there! You can also encounter these incredible primates in Budongo Forest, Kalinzu Forest, Kyambura Gorge, and Mgahinga Gorge, each offering unique experiences.

Go Mountain Gorilla Trekking

If you’re looking for adventure, you can’t get any better than this! Get up close and personal with mountain gorillas in the tropical rain forests of Bwindi and Mgahinga.

Only a handful of people get to spend time with wild mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, because there are roughly only 720 left on the planet.  Gorilla trekking is therefore both a fascinating and truly unique experience, one that’s understandably at the top of many people’s bucket lists.

Raft the Nile

Rafting is understandably one of Jinja’s most popular activities, taking on the Grade III-IV-V rapids as you rush 20km downriver. Less adrenaline-fueled kayaking trips are also possible, as are treks or mountain bike excursions into the nearby Mabira Forest, where the air is punctuated by the eerie shrieks of tree hyraxes.

Discover Uganda’s Golden Monkeys

Are you ready to embark on a captivating journey to encounter one of Earth’s rarest and most endangered primates? Look no further than the magnificent golden monkeys of Uganda’s Virunga Volcanoes.

Nestled within the lush landscapes of Mgahinga National Park, the elusive golden monkey is a wonder. As an endemic species to the Virunga region, these stunning primates offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.

Uganda, known as the “Pearl of Africa,” proudly boasts the largest population of golden monkeys, providing unparalleled chances to observe these remarkable creatures in their natural bamboo forest habitat.

Canoeing on Lake Bunyonyi and Lake Mutanda

Experience the magic of island-hopping on the serene waters of Lake Bunyonyi or Lake Mutanda with a memorable dugout canoeing adventure. These traditional, handcrafted canoes, carved from robust tree trunks, have been a vital means of transportation in Southwest Uganda for centuries, offering you a unique glimpse into local heritage.

As you gracefully paddle across the calm, mirror-like surface of the lakes, you can take the helm or let an experienced boatman guide your journey. Either way, you’ll be captivated by stunning vistas of lush islands sprinkled across the tranquil waters. Many islands are inhabited, allowing you to step ashore and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and traditions of the local communities.

Discover the beauty of Bigodi wetlands swamp

When exploring Uganda’s stunning landscapes, visit the Bigodi Wetlands Jungle Swamp. This extraordinary ecosystem is vibrant and teeming with rich biodiversity, making it a top destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers seeking an unforgettable experience.

Bigodi Wetlands is renowned for its remarkable avian population, featuring the breathtaking large blue turaco among over 200 bird species. Imagine the thrill of witnessing a dazzling array of birds fluttering in their natural habitat, it’s a paradise for both novice and expert birders eager to expand their horizons.

Explore the Crater Lakes

No exploration of Uganda’s natural beauty is complete without a visit to the captivating Crater Lakes in Western Uganda. These unique geological marvels, nestled within the lush landscapes of Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Kibale Forest region, offer a fascinating experience for visitors.

Go on the renowned Crater Lake Trail, where you can navigate the diverse terrains surrounding these ancient, water-filled craters. Choose to hike the Top Trail or drive along the Explosion Crater Drive and witness the stunning variety of these lakes, some glimmering with deep blue waters. In contrast, others are adorned with vibrant savannah grasses or lush riparian forests.

In conclusion

Uganda is one of the most exciting and beautiful holiday destinations in the world. Whether you are wowed by landscapes, wildlife, culture, or simply seek adventure, Uganda is the perfect destination for you.
