There are a lot of items that you’ll need when traveling, from your passport to medications and, of course, a suitcase full of clothes and accessories. If you plan on staying in the sun for any extended period of time, you may also want to have some sunscreen handy.Tips on what to do and what not to do to protect your eyes the next time you go on a trip.In this post, you will find how to protect your eyes
But you might be forgetting something else: sunglasses.
Your eye health is very important, and if you’re going out in the sun without protecting your eyes, you may actually be causing them damage.
A few tips to remember to protect your eyes:
- Fit matters. If your sunglasses are uncomfortable, you’re not going to want to wear them for long. Choose a fit that allows for hours of wear without being uncomfortable around the ears. Frames should be snug but not so tight that they cause you discomfort during wear.
- Snowy conditions require sunglasses. UV rays reflect off of the snow at a much higher level than, say, grass, and this is especially true with fresh snow. This means that the UV exposure while skiing can be 2 – 4 times higher than even at the beach.
- UV-A and UV-B protection. UV protection is a must, but a lot of polarized sunglasses don’t offer adequate protection for your eyes. You’ll need to make sure that your sunglasses are able to protect against UV rays and not just help combat glare.
All of this is important, and of course, you’ll want to consider your design, too. You want to be fashionable, and there are a lot of options available. One thing I see a lot is a tourist breaking one of their lenses on expensive designer sunglasses and throwing the entire pair out.
Don’t do this
You don’t need to replace Maui Jim sunglasses if you have broken lenses. There are replacement lenses, often offering better overall quality compared to your original lenses, that will work just fine.
Theft is also a big issue in some countries, and it’s very easy to leave your sunglasses on the beach if a native asks if you want to join them for a drink. Whether you’re forgetful or simply have your valuables stolen, personal property insurance is good to have.
While you may not need this insurance if you’re traveling with just a few possessions on you, it’s a good idea if you’re bringing a laptop, Gucci glasses, expensive handbags or other items with you on vacation.
Insurance is there to protect your valuables to ensure that if they’re lost or stolen, you can replace them.
Hats can also help shield the sun from your eyes, and this is something that a lot of travelers forget. A nice sun hat is still stylish and is something that a lot of travelers have on them in virtually every destination.
Eye safety is very important when you travel, and if you’re an island-hopping, beach-going person, it’s always a good idea to make eye protection a top priority. Protecting your eyes from the sun will keep your eyes healthy, less dry and allow you to fend of potential eye damage.
