Pizza Grizzly – Oldest Theme Restaurant in Guatemala

Since living in Guatemala one of the biggest challenges we have had was finding good pizza. We have tasted every pizza made in Antigua and simply are not pleased. Isn’t pizza supposed to be an easy thing to make? Apparently not!

Four years of living in Guatemala, my husband just remembered that when he was a kid, his parents used to take him to a fun pizza place called Pizza Grizzly. It may not be one of the top pizza chains, but he didn’t know if it existed anymore but did have great memories of it.

So, after a wet and wild day at Mundo Petapa IRTRA amusement park I made it my mission to find it.  And guess what, one of the very first kid-friendly, themed restaurant in Guatemala City was still serving delicious pizza. And my kids and I couldn’t wait to try it out.

The minute we entered the cowboy waiter escorted us right to our table that was a private booth themed as a jail.

Not sure what it is about kids and jails, but my son was loving it. He had a lot of fun pretending to be a bad guy in jail while we waited for our food.

The brick oven pizza comes in tons of flavors. From regular cheese pizza to meat lovers delight and vegetarian specialty. It was among the best that I have tried in Guatemala. and this is coming from a New Yorker with high standards for pizza.

Dessert – I didn’t have any room for sweets, but my kids did. I can always trust my sons to have some space left for something sweet.

Brownie with ice cream – my kids didn’t even give me a chance to take a photo that’s how good it was.

Chocolate cheesecake – just look at it. It was my husband’s but I stole a small bite and it was delicious.

  1. Your article’s premise is mistaken. Pizza Grizzly closed in the early 90’s. This new incarnation is about two years old, and it doesn’t resemble the original, which didn’t have jails, or big plastic bears. It was only a pizza place. The only thing the old and the new restaurants share in common is the name and the logo.

    1. Thanks Sam, it is yummy!!!

I guess you’ve been there and know first hand.

  2. Yum! I know that craving – pizza in a culture where you don’t necessarily expect to find it, but when you do, it’s bliss! Pizza Grizzly looks like it makes delicious pizza and provides endless entertainment fir children and their vivid imaginations!

  3. Looks like an entertaining pizza place. I know we’ve been spoiled with delicious pizza the last few years living in Italy.

  4. I remember pizza grizzly in the 80’s. My favorite part we’re the go-karts does pizza grizzly still have those?
