The Maldives might be one of the smallest countries in the world, but they’ve got a big reputation as one of the planet’s premier tourist destinations. A quick look at some photos of their enchanting white beaches and exquisitely clear seas makes it easy to see why.
However, planning a trip there can be complicated because of the nation’s geography. It comprises 1,190 islands, of which 106 are resorts. Some are close to an international airport, but some are very far away. Others are close to ‘local’ islands where Maldivians live, and some are very isolated or surrounded by other resorts. Of course, each resort island also has its own unique qualities.

When you plan your Maldives trip, you need to think about these factors along with your budget, the time of year that you visit, and much more. This guide is here to help you plan the most important aspects of your trip.
Choose the right time of year
Part of what makes The Maldives such an attractive destination is the fact that it has a year-round hot and sunny climate. However, like most countries which enjoy tropical weather, they experience a monsoon season. This typically lasts from May until October, but is at its worst in June.
Most activities at Maldives resorts are based outdoors. When it’s raining hard, your options are limited to the gym, spa, restaurants, and bars. That might sound like a dream for some, and you can get a good deal by going in the monsoon season. However, those who want to see and do a bit more are better off sticking to the dry season. December to March is the high season, so if price is an important factor then you might consider November or April.

Stay somewhere that suits your budget
The Maldives is not a great destination for budget travellers. The vast majority of resorts are only interested in catering to wealthy guests and offer world-class luxury experiences at premium prices.
That said, there are some ways to make your stay a little cheaper. Opting for a chain resort such as Pullman Resort Maldives is often a little less costly, and you might be able to take advantage of any reward scheme points you have.
Also, foregoing the famous overwater wooden villas and instead staying in a hotel room or villa on the island is usually cheaper. Picking a resort close to the airport where you arrive can save you money too. Seaplane rides to distant islands can cost upwards of $1,000.

Plan your activities
There’s a lot to see and do in The Maldives, and depending on the length of your stay and your budget you might not be able to do them all. Also, you might have to book places on some of them, so it’s best to plan in advance.
One of the most popular activities available in The Maldives is snorkelling. If there is one thing you’ll find at every resort there, it’s crystal clear sea full of all kinds of colourful ocean creatures, including coral, clownfish, and most famously manta rays and whale sharks. Scuba diving is another great way to see these that are widely available in The Maldives, and resorts often have their own dive sites where guests can explore coral reefs and shipwrecks.
Watersports such as surfing, kayaking, and jet-skiing are also very popular, with plenty of resorts providing equipment and qualified instructors to help guests enjoy them.
Excursions to local islands are also available. These allow guests to learn about the Maldivian culture and way of life, as well as pick up souvenirs. And of course, no luxury resort would be complete without offering some pampering spa services and fine dining.

Pack everything you need
Resorts in The Maldives typically market themselves as offering an escape from everyday life. They absolutely deliver on this, but if you don’t come prepared then the isolation and disconnection can be a negative.
While resorts try their best to provide as much as they can for guests, there are a number of things you will want to make sure you bring with you. Appropriately light and airy clothing is obviously a must, along with some exercise and swimming gear. Beach towels are also essential.
When it comes to personal care items, two things not to forget are sunscreen and insect repellent. You may be able to find these things once you’re there, but the available selection is often quite limited.
For entertainment, books, magazines, or a Kindle are essential, along with speakers or headphones. Remember to bring chargers for all your items, and a universal adapter if necessary. The Maldives uses British-style 230v plugs.
SummaryThe Maldives is one of the most peaceful, sunny, and beautiful destinations on the planet. With the right planning and preparation, such as avoiding the rainy season, doing activities you love, and remembering to bring everything you need, it offers a stay like no other.
