Tips for Keeping Kids Safe During Building Work

Create safe places

If your renovation means that you have to prohibit access to certain rooms of your house, you need to think about setting up space for your family to use in the meantime. This is especially important if the kitchen or bathroom is out of action. You will need to think about temporary services so you can cook and go to the toilet.

Keep the air clear

Building work creates a lot of mess and a lot of dust. Air thick with particles from things like drywall and masonry can be really hazardous to your health when breathed in. They can cause headaches, dizziness and even be carcinogenic. You should schedule your building work in the best way to counter this. If you are doing lots of painting, do it during the warmer parts of the year so you can leave the windows open as much as possible without fumes building up. You can also choose paints and building materials that are free of chemicals that could be hazardous.

Keep your pets calm

Your children may not be the only ones you have to worry about. Animals can also find building work extremely stressful. They may act out of character when exposed to loud noises and people they have never seen before. This can lead them to lash out or run away. A good way to prevent this is to keep your pets worn out. Exercise them more often than usual, take them on long walks or spend extra time throwing their ball in the garden. You could also put the radio on during work to dampen the construction noises.

If you are mindful of everything above, your building work should go a lot smoother, and you will be back to normal in no time.
