1. Canada

On October 17, 2018, Canada announced the legalization of recreational marijuana.

This was a federal law. But Canada is divided into provinces, which will determine the terms of distribution and sale of marijuana.

It seems the government won’t be promoting the use of marijuana. But they’re no longer going to stand in your way.

2. Mexico

3. Costa Rica

7. Ecuador

Don’t exceed over 10 grams of marijuana for personal use and you’ll stay on the right side of the law in Ecuador. It is highly illegal to cultivate or sell the plant, though.

8. Peru

You are permitted to smoke pot in Peru. But it’s probably best to stick to your private home or someone else’s home.

9. Uruguay

In Uruguay, smoking marijuana is very popular.

In 2013, Uruguay became the first country in the world to legalize marijuana. You’re even allowed to grow up to six plants.

10. Cambodia

If you’re in a restaurant in Cambodia and you come across a dish marked ‘Happy’, it’s probably got weed in it.

Marijuana consumption is actually illegal in Cambodia. And yet, it’s common and culturally acceptable to smoke in public and private.

11. Laos

Similar to its neighbor Cambodia, marijuana consumption is also illegal in Laos where you’ll also find ‘happy’ dishes.

It’s worth considering being careful picking up weed in Laos, though.

12. Belgium

If you’re carrying or buying less than 3 grams of marijuana, it’s legal to consume for personal use.

But, don’t shout about it. You should stick to your private home if you want to light up in this European country.

13. Italy

Definitely, do not be found either selling or cultivating marijuana in Italy. You can get away with a small amount of marijuana for personal use, though.

14. The Netherlands

Marijuana is decriminalized in the Netherlands for personal use and has been for many decades.

15. Portugal

Portugal not only decriminalized marijuana but all drugs in 2001.

You can no longer be given a prison sentence for any drug-related crime. However, you may be handed a fine or drug abuse treatment.

If you want to stay out of trouble, don’t carry more than 25 grams of marijuana during your time in Portugal.

16. Spain

It is legal to cultivate and consume marijuana for personal use in Spain. It is also worth noting that cannabis clubs are commonplace in Spain.

In 2017, Catalonia (such as Barcelona) a region of Spain, decriminalized for personal use. So you’re permitted to smoke in public without encountering legal problems.

17. Switzerland

If you want to smoke pot in Switzerland, then you can in small amounts alone. In fact, even supermarkets are selling marijuana to customers.

There is also a push for greater measures to legalize cannabis in Switzerland. But as of yet, stick to personal and private use of weed here.

18. The Czech Republic

It is decriminalized in the central European nation to carry up to 15 grams of marijuana. So that should probably be enough if you’re stopping over on your inter-rail trip.

19. Russia

You may be surprised to know that Russia is not strict on weed. You can possess up to 6 grams.

In the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Russian government permitted football fans to bring their medical marijuana with them.

20. Australia

Australia is a leader in making medical marijuana legal, which has been legal in the country for a couple of years now.

And yet, marijuana consumption for other uses is not legal. But, it is decriminalized in most of the country.
