A Guide to Hiking in UK and Europe

hiking in uk and europe

When you are hiking in the UK and Europe, there are some things you will need to keep in mind to ensure your safety and also to make sure you have a great hiking experience.  First things first, you have to figure out how long you want to hike.  If you are a beginner, you don’t want to take on a huge trail your first time out.  Start of with just a few hours on a Sunday afternoon.  If you are an experienced hiker, then the choice is yours as to where you want to hike.

Think about whether you will be hiking alone or with several others.  Many people like the peace and tranquility of hiking alone with others prefer the bonding experience of hiking with a group.  Not to mention that it is much safer to hike with others than by yourself.  If you do decide to hike alone, be sure you let someone know where you will be hiking and when you expect to return.  This way, if you do not return within a certain amount of time, the proper authorities can be notified.

For hiking attire, you want to be as comfortable as possible.  As for footwear, you have a couple of good options available.  Hiking boots are most likely your best option since they give your feet good support.  Sneakers are okay for the majority of the time but you do need to be careful on slippery surfaces since they do not give you much grip.  Socks are a crucial part of hiking as they will keep your feet warm and dry.  Socks are also designed to prevent your feet from getting blisters.  Do not wear shorts when hiking; instead opt for pants.  Pants will protect you against cold weather, rain, poison ivy and scratches on your legs.

You will need to pack a backpack with essentials you will need for your hike.  Be sure that your cell phone is fully charged before you head out in case of emergencies.  In addition, if you have a Smartphone, you can use various apps such as GPS and distance tracker.  You will also need to have a camera with you unless you are custom to taking photos with your cell phone.  Also needed in the backpack is sunscreen, bug spray, first aid kit, sunglasses, pocket knife and food.

As far as food is concerned, you will want to pack nuts such as almonds or walnuts.  These are ideal for snaking and are full of protein.  Be sure to pack a waster bottle so you can stay hydrated throughout the day.  Other foods you may want to pack include fruits, beef jerky, apples with almond butter, trail mix and granola bars.  Beef jerky is easy to pack and has lots of protein.  Apples with almond butter are great sources of energy.  Great fruit options include raisins and bananas.
