Green Rush, Guatemala: Glamping near Guatemala City

view from green rush guatemala
One of the biggest draws of glamping in Green Rush Guatemala is the views, from many points in the area you can take good views of Amatitlan Lake in the distance.

The one thing my oldest son keeps asking me over and over again is to camp. This may sound like an easy thing to do, but when you’re living in Guatemala City, safety and amenities are a huge component of adequate family camping.

After tons of research for a place that didn’t require long-distance driving or even remote nature spots, I found Green Rush in Guatemala.

And what a surprise, we didn’t need to leave the country to truly encounter glamping. It was less than a one-hour drive from Antigua. One name kept on popping up over and over again:

Green Rush in Guatemala City will transport you to a different place without leaving the comforts and confines of the city. After talking to Henry, the owner, I knew we were going to visit a special place, but I didn’t have any idea just what was awaiting us.

In this travel guide, I’ll share with you my personal experience of glamping in Green Rush, Guatemala, how you can experience the fullest, and some pro tips.

So, without further ado, let’s get started!

How To Experience Green Rush Guatemala To The Fullest

Green Rush is located on the Carretera (road) Colmenas-Villa Canales in Villa Canales, Guatemala.

And let’s not forget, it’s a sight to behold! With lush greenery, majestic mountains, and breathtaking views of Lake Amatitlan and nearby volcanoes, it’s like nature’s own masterpiece.

When you first arrive, whether via rental car, bus, or shuttle, you will go down a little hill, and you will have to park your car. From there, it’s all about adventure.

From the viewpoints of Green Rush you can enjoy stunning views and the best sunset you’ll ever see in the country.

1. Jeep Pick-Up

There is no way to take your car to the main area where you have hiking, fun activities, and camping. Yet, two jeeps will pick you up and bring you to the main clubhouse. It feels like you’re going on an expedition.

The adventure starts even before getting to Green Rush, you need to leave your car and ride your way to the spot on a 4×4 vehicle.

2. Hiking trails

The whole park has over 10 kilometers of trails you can walk on. You will find lots of cool mini-stops along the way, such as a natural jacuzzi, a horse stable, and many hammocks to relax in. The trails are well-marked and easy to follow.

3. Relax Deck

Here, you can spend the whole afternoon hammocking, reading a book, or simply enjoying the super stunning view. You can also grab some snacks and drinks from the nearby bar while taking in the peaceful surroundings.

The area is blessed with a lot of green areas, pure air, and animal sounds, making it the perfect environment to relax on its hammock lounge.

Top Activities To Try:

1. Deer Sanctuary

The park has a huge enclosure where you can visit deer in their natural habitat. The deer are imprinted to humans, so they don’t have any fear of us and continue to do their natural thing as you quietly walk past them.

Green Rush is also a deer sanctuary and you can spot them occasionally, but you need to keep your eyes open since those animals tend to avoid humans.

2. Waterfalls

This is a bit of a hike, but if you’re into exploring, this is a trip worth making. The view of the waterfall is simply spectacular.

You can stand on top of a huge rock, just in front of the waterfall, and feel the mist from it.

There are many hiking paths in the area you can do, and several things to check out, from animal and flora spotting to waterfalls and small rivers.

3. Bird Watching

The park has over 50 species of birds, porcupines, armadillos, reptiles and more. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a jaguar or ocelot!

The park also offers bird-watching tours with an experienced guide who can help you identify different species and provide interesting facts about them.

4. Horseback riding

Henry has a gift. This is beyond evident when you see him with his horses and also see how well the horses are treated.

We’ve done lots of horseback riding all over Central America and have to say these are some of the best horses yet!

With so many trails, it’s much easier to do them on a horse. And for kids, it’s a huge fun factor.

5. Canopy

You can also try zip-lining through the jungle canopy! It’s a thrilling adventure and also gives you a birds-eye view of the lush surroundings. Safety is a top priority here, so you can feel at ease as you soar through the trees.

This is the best canopy for younger kids. My four-year-old has found his favorite activity and wants to go on it over and over and over again. It’s a huge zipline of over 350 meters long.

There are many activities besides camping, you can enjoy a canopy tour and zip-line between the trees!

6. Archery

Yes, that’s correct – Archery. It’s not an activity I ever thought about, but once you are here, it’s really fun.

The actual shooting range is in a separate part from the park’s trails, so you never have to worry about hitting anyone. It is in the middle of the jungle and truly well done.

Green Rush offers a shooting range to practice and archery a must-do activity you need to try while visiting the area.

7. Camping

The best part about this place is you can stay the night. But what excited me, and I’m not at all into camping, is their luxury tents. Yes, luxury camping is my kind of camping.

The tents are similar to the luxury African safari tents with king-sized beds and a private bathroom. Green Rush is known mainly for its glamping tents, one of the tops in Guatemala.

These are beautifully decorated tents that come with a comfortable bed and pillows.

Since my son wasn’t up for that kind of camping, there are designated areas for hitching up a tent. But for us, it worked out even better. Our luxury tent had a large porch, and it was big enough for my son to put his tent and sleep safely next to us yet still have the camping experience.

🏡Where to Stay – Here are Suggestions

This is my favorite place to look for accommodations, it offers different types, a ton of locations, and good price options.

🗺️Get Around Hassle-Free

This one is the perfect option to look for different transportation options between cities, from flights, buses, and taxis to minivans and more.

🛫Find Cheap Flights

Whenever I need to fly, I head to this website for low-cost flights.

8. Bonfire fun

This is what makes your camping experience come to life. And this is a gorgeous ritual here. First of all, there is a private lounge area (outdoors) for people who are staying in the luxury tents.

They started us off with hor d’oeuvres and beer and drinks for adults, and for kids, they have marshmallows and hot dogs.

The kids go and help gather the wood and the firemaking starts. This was by far the highlight of our night. It was so well-orchestrated and just plain fun. However, the views of the sunset make this experience that much more memorable.

Of course, there’s no camping or glamping without a bonfire but in Green Rush, you do it with stunning views as a backdrop.

Recommendations for Your Visit to Green Rush

1. Camping & Activities

One thing you will have in Green Rush is an action-packed day full of nature and activities. You’ll be surprised how tired you will be at the end of the day. It’s fantastic and refreshing. My main recommendation if you’re planning on coming for the camping experience is to come early on the first day.

Nothing beats a good night sleeping in a tent or the luxury tents than after a full day of nature fun. This way, when you wake up the next day, you’ll have breakfast, and if you want to do a repeat with any of the activities, you’ll be refreshed.

2. Food

When we were there, the restaurant of Green Rush wasn’t fully functioning yet, but I was told it would be a full restaurant open all the time by June. So, in the meantime, be prepared.

The food options are limited, and they take a very long time to prepare. So if you’re with kids, they will get really hungry and very cranky. So bring your food while you wait for the restaurant’s food to be ready.

Plus, being so close to the city has its huge benefits too. With our kids super hungry, we just ordered a Domino’s Pizza (less than 30 minutes away), and bam, it was there. Not exactly camping food, but since we barely ate this kind of stuff, it was all part of the bonus fun.

If you are staying in Guatemala City or Antigua, this is a MUST-VISIT place. Also, there are a ton of things to do in Guatemala City and Antigua. You will never believe that you are so close to the chaos yet so transported into nature.
