Always pack workout clothes

Workout clothes don’t take up much space in your suitcase, and they are a must for keeping up with fitness away from home. Seeing them amongst the other items you packed will also serve as a reminder to get some movement in.

Be ready with workouts you can do anywhere

Avoid the excuse of ‘I don’t have the space or the equipment’ and have some workouts handy that you can do anywhere, from your hotel room to outside your accommodation. You can use fitness apps, for example 30 Days Fitness Challenge app, that lets you follow along guided workouts and track your progress and activity level.

Keep active on your trip

Many people find that they actually get more movement in while away on holiday than they do at home. Boost your exercise sessions with extra movement by keeping active on your trip. Use the stairs rather than taking the elevator, and walk when possible rather than using public transportation or taxi.

Look for local parks and/or trails

If you like to run or walk out in nature, look for local parks and/or trails. This is also a wonderful way to get to know a place and more that it has to offer rather than the city life. Many cities are not as pedestrian-friendly or runner-friendly either, so trails are the way to go.

Sign up for a local gym class/spin class

Before you arrive at your destination, check out the fitness classes that are available. You can sign up for a local gym class/spin class and continue with your routine or try something new while away from home. Bonus: you can meet some locals at a class and maybe get some new ideas for workout styles.

Cut out small portions of time to workout

Even if you are used to workouts that last an hour or two, remember that something is better than nothing! So cut out small portions of time to workout during your day, whether it is for a run, a stair workout or a HIIT workout. When you travel and are away from home, chances are you are quite busy so you want to give yourself enough time to get a workout in but not let it dominate your day if you have a busy schedule.

Go on active tours

Explore the city you’re in on bike or via a walking tour. Skip the bus tour and get those steps and movement in! This is also one of the best ways to explore a new place, as you have the flexibility to stop and go as well as wander down side streets as you please. Be sure to wear your comfortable shoes!

While not disrupting your routine is crucial for many, it is also very important to give your body the appropriate time to rest. Taking a small break can be a very good way to also boost your motivation!
