Why Fun Should be a Part of Your Life as an Adult & How to Seek it

As you get older, life becomes more about chores, work, and responsibility. Your free time is your recovery time from having to live in the bustling world as an adult. Unfortunately, this tends to leave no time for fun, or worse, people believe that fun is not something they should prioritise (or even have) as an adult, especially as a parent.

Responsibilities can be overwhelming, and  many people suffer from chronic stress and fatigue from trying to meet the demands of society and social pressures. Appearing mature is important, and a person’s mindset shifts to productivity from play. Busy and planned schedules become the norm, leaving less room for spontaneity, and having fun can be seen as childish.

There are a lot of misconceptions around having fun as an adult, as well as a lot of pressure that presents as a barrier from having fun.

Having fun as an adult should be seen as a priority and a critical part of a happy and fulfilling life. Having fun can be a great way to relieve stress and improve mental health and well-being. There are also a whole range of other benefits, such as strengthening social connections, improving relationships, improving your mood and energy levels, enhancing cognitive function and most importantly, providing you with a satisfying life that you enjoy.

Being an adult is hard enough, but it is made harder without any fun and enjoyment. To help you on your journey, here are some important tips to help you shift your mindset and introduce more fun into your life.

Choosing activities you genuinely enjoy is one of the fastest ways to reduce stress and reset your mind.

Shift your mindset

Taking a look at your beliefs, challenging them, and shifting your mindset is an important part of the process. It is likely that somewhere in your life, you have learned that fun is for children and not for adults. Adults must be mature and fulfill the obligations of society. While you do have more responsibility as an adult, that part is true, it is not true however that fun is only for children.

It is important that you start to consider your mindset around fun and play. Start by giving yourself permission to dip into a little fun and happiness. The world today is all about “hustle culture,” which is damaging. Start to acknowledge the importance of fun and play on your mental health. It is an investment in yourself.

Redefine what fun means to you. Everyone is different, which can also make it hard to enjoy things. It also doesn’t have to be loud or expensive if that isn’t you. Fun could be something small like dancing with a friend. Start by making a list.

Introduce more fun into your life

It may be difficult to do at first, especially spontaneously, so start by scheduling in some fun time for yourself. Intentionally choose an activity and set aside some time for a fun activity. Treat it like you do other commitments.

You can use this time to reconnect with your childhood passions, try new things, and be curious.

Once you have started to introduce fun with yourself, you can begin to include others too. Speak with your friends and plan a fun night out, for example, with the best cocktails downtown. Building a nightlife is a common fun thing for adults to enjoy. This can really help you to amplify the fun and stay accountable.

Having fun isn’t just for children; it is vital for adults too. Follow these top tips to help you get started.
