Digital Nomads: How to Embrace the RV Lifestyle

There’s much to love about the digital nomad lifestyle. It allows for new experiences and keeps things fresh, all the while being sustainable. Many people need to save up — and use their PTO — to take a trip. Digital nomads can do it while also making money and boosting their bank balance.

In our view, there’s no better option for digital nomads than embracing the RV lifestyle, which offers all the benefits — and none of the drawbacks — of being a professional nomad. You’ll get to see new places while also having all the comforts of your own space. Plus, it can be a lot more cost-effective than subletting an apartment in one of those trending digital nomad destinations.

Ready to jump into the RV way of living? We’ve put together a cheat sheet that’ll help set you up for success.

Choosing the right RV size depends on balancing comfort, fuel efficiency, and how often you plan to move between destinations.

Rent Your Home

Renting or subletting your current home is a good way to keep the property (you might want it in the future) without having to foot the bill for the mortgage/rent. It’s recommended to rent a storage unit so you can clear the space without having to take everything with you on the trip.

Invest in a Comfortable RV

You’ll have the option to buy or lease an RV. If you’re fully committed, then buying is the way to go; they hold their value well, allowing you to recoup much of the cost if you decide to sell. If you’re just dipping your toe in the RV waters, then leasing is the way to go. You can usually secure long-term RV leases that have a per-day cost that’s much lower than a standard daily rental.

Whichever option you take, make sure that your RV is comfortable. You’ll be living and working in the vehicle for months at a time, so it’s important that there’s plenty of space/comfort/amenities, etc.

Look Up Long-Term RV Sites

A good RV sets you up for success. The right RV park guarantees it. A good long-term RV park will have everything you need to live and work comfortably, including full hookups that include electricity, water, and sewer connection, as well as wifi, laundry facilities, and clean showers.

But don’t just focus on the amenities. The location counts, too. The best RV parks are located near stunning outdoor areas where you can hike, fish, and kayak once you’ve finished your work for the day. In short: they offer the perfect place to live, work, and have fun.

Managing Work

Your RV and RV park will provide everything you need to work, but it’s still important to be mindful of finding the right work setup. You’ll find it much easier to sink into deep work if you have a comfortable, distraction-free space. It usually takes people a little bit of adjustment until they can work remotely at their highest level, but you should be in the swing of things within a week or two — and after that, you’ll be set up for long-term success.
