Charles Bridge, also known as the Stone Bridge, is the oldest standing bridge over the Vltava River. Its significance goes beyond merely connecting two parts of Prague; it is a symbol of Czech history and architectural mastery. Its story dates back to the medieval era and continues to influence the present.

The story of Charles Bridge
The construction of Charles Bridge began in the 14th century, specifically on July 9, 1357, under the direction of Emperor Charles IV. Originally planned as a stone structure—a remarkable and ambitious choice at the time—this design highlighted the visionary ambitions of the medieval builders. The bridge was eventually completed in the early 15th century.
Initially known simply as the “Stone” or “Prague” bridge, the name was changed to Charles Bridge around 1870. This bridge was built to replace the earlier Judith Bridge, which was destroyed in 1342 due to spring ice thaw.

Architecture and artistic decoration
Charles Bridge is distinguished not only by its functional and engineering excellence but also by its rich artistic decoration. The bridge is adorned with statues and sculptural groups, primarily Baroque works from the 17th century, crafted by renowned sculptors such as Matthias Braun and Jan Brokoff. Since the early 20th century, these statues have gradually been replaced with replicas to preserve the original artistic heritage.
Myths and legends
The history of Charles Bridge is filled with tales and legends. One well-known story suggests that the mortar used in its construction was mixed with eggs to increase its strength. However, modern research from the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague has revealed that the mortar likely contained a mix of milk and wine instead, with no eggs used at all.
Another significant legend is the tale of Bruncvík. According to this legend, Bruncvík’s magical sword is hidden somewhere within the bridge. Allegedly, this sword could decapitate enemies at his command. The legend tells that if the Czech land were ever in danger, St. Wenceslas and the Blaník knights would come to its aid, the sword would appear, and it would vanquish the enemies to secure peace for the Czech lands forever. During repairs to the bridge after a flood in 1890, a rusty sword was indeed discovered, but it was unlikely the legendary Bruncvík’s sword. This discovery, however, was not surprising, as battles have taken place on the bridge since the Hussite Wars.
