  1. Create a Yacht Checklist

Before you can have a smooth sailing experience, you have to make sure that you have a checklist of what you should bring with you on your yacht. Apart from having the essentials like tools and handheld radios for emergencies, it also pays to know what are the types of cruising sails that would be appropriate for your yacht. This way, you can research whether you need to get a different one for your voyage.

  1. Start Slow

It can be tempting to show off your new yacht, but it’s important to start slowly. Make sure that you steer carefully and keep your movements steady. This way, you can test the waters and see if you’re made for the sea.

  1. Check Weather Forecast

It can be exciting to bring your new yacht out to the sea. For many first-time yacht owners, this excitement always gets the best of them. They venture out to the sea without even checking if the weather would be ideal for sailing. In the end, they need to radio in for help because they’re stuck in the middle of the sea, unsure of how to maneuver back to safety.

Remember, rough seas can be tough even for seasoned sailors! Make sure to check forecasts before sailing. When you are out on the sea, it also pays to note sudden weather changes. If you feel like the weather is going to get ominous, don’t hesitate and start heading back to the slip.

  1. Dress for the Sea

While you may see people on Instagram or in the movies barely wearing anything when they head out to sail, experienced sailors will tell you it isn’t appropriate. Whenever you are sailing, it’s best to layer up. The weather from the shore can be entirely different when you’re on the water. Make sure that you have your windbreaker with you. It’s way easier to remove your clothes once it feels warm rather than gritting your teeth when it starts to get chilly.

  1. Inspect Anchor

Another important thing to check when sailing is your anchor and chain. See if they need to be untangled. Examine if there are links that should be replaced. Some emergencies may require you to drop your anchor, and dealing with a tangled chain can slow down the process.

  1. Know your Navigation

When you are out on the sea, it can be easy to get distracted. You may find yourself being amazed at the views or the beautiful weather. If you have guests onboard, you can also find yourself getting too deep in your conversations that you may lose track of your direction. Knowing how to navigate the area is essential. Identify your landmarks. Pack technical equipment and other navigational tools, so you don’t end up wandering the vast ocean rather than enjoying the trip with your family.

  1. Pack Supplies

Bring water and food, so you don’t have to worry about getting hungry or dehydrated while you are out sailing. Pack emergency supplies. Ensure that your mobile devices are fully charged to still have a way to communicate in case you encounter any problems. If you’re with someone who may have medical issues, make sure that you also pack their medication.

Follow these tips, and you’ll be sure to have an enjoyable time as you sail your new yacht!
