7 of the Top Things To Do in Vietnam
1. Cruise Along the Mekong Delta
With rice paddies on either side of you and nothing but the sound of the water rippling underneath you, there is nothing quite like the serenity of the Mekong Delta. Board a Mekong river tour and marvel at the outstanding scenery that flanks the river. You will get an authentic insight into what life is like on the banks of one of the most powerful rivers in the world.
2. Visit the War Remnants Museum
Proudly sitting in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, this museum offers a fantastic insight into what happened in the Vietnam War. The exhibitions give a Vietnamese perspective of the war and are likely to open your eyes to a different side of the notorious and controversial war between Vietnam and the United States. Be prepared for some rather gruesome descriptions and exhibits.
3. Eat a Big Bowl of Pho
Pho is the national dish of Vietnam and can be found on every street corner throughout the whole country. The premise is simple: a big bowl of broth filled with noodles and strips of beef, topped with spring onions and coriander. It is filling, wholesome and incredibly cheap. Keep your eyes peeled for hole-in-the-wall pho vendors with big queues. The bigger the queue the better the pho is likely to be – it is always worth waiting.
4. Get an Adrenaline Rush in Dalat
Situated in the Highlands of Vietnam, the cooler temperature in Dalat is a big draw for travelers who need some respite from the heat. The architecture here is a remnant from the French colonial days and the region boasts some impressive buildings. But, what people really come here for are the thrills. Whether its hiking through the valley or canyoning down the waterfalls, Dalat has become synonymous with adrenaline rush.
5. Get a Tailored Suit in Hoi An
Ok there’s a lot more to do in Hoi An than get bespoke suits but that’s a good place to start. Here, clothes makers line the streets, willing to make handmade suits for you at delightfully cheap rates. Once you’ve got yourself kitted out, take a walk along the river, check out the beautiful Japanese Bridge and admire the lush rice paddies that fringe the town. Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s most picturesque destinations.
6. Relax in Nha Trang
Nha Trang is Vietnam’s premier beach spot and appeals to people of all ages and walks of life. From the hippie hideouts to the luxury resorts that line the coast, there is something here for every taste and budget. What’s more, Nha Trang is home to Vinpearl, Vietnam’s best theme park. Ride the cable cars, explore the nature reserves and stretch out on the beach. The only thing you’ll have to worry about in Nha Trang is forcing yourself to leave at some point.
7. Sail Through Halong Bay
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is perhaps one of the most popular sights in Vietnam and it’s not hard to see why. Dozens of boats wind their way around lush, limestone mountain islands that pepper a stretch of water just outside of Vietnam. Most people will spend a couple of nights on one of the traditional boats as they soak up the magnificent views of Halong Bay.
