There are many travel destinations, but for some of us, its Ecuador that’s calling our names.

It can be scary traveling to somewhere so far away and foreign, but with some helpful Ecuador travel tips, you can have the time of your life.

We’ve put together a list of 10 tips that will help you make the best out of your trip.

Ecuador Travel Tips

1. Get the Relevant Immunizations

Anytime you travel to a different county, it’s important to make sure you are up to date on all your immunizations. Make sure you tell your doctor where you are going. There are some immunizations that you don’t need in the states but you will need if you are traveling.

You can be exposed to some diseases in South America that you have never come in contact with before, so you have no immunity to them. Getting the proper immunizations before you go can save your life.

That way, when you’re having a blast in Ecuador and get bit by something or eat something that’s a little questionable, you’re covered.

2. Understand the Macho Culture

In Ecuador, most things are about machismo. It’s not uncommon to have men catcall you as you’re walking down the street, even in modest clothing.

In most cases, it’s not to intimidate or scare you. They are just more comfortable with that sort of thing. If you’re uncomfortable, try to ignore it, as it’s a harmless part of their culture. Remember, a lot of the fun of traveling is being surrounded by a new culture.

3. Bring Your Own Sun-Screen

Ecuador is right on the equator, meaning it’s closer to the sun. Most people in the United States aren’t used to that kind of sun exposure, and their skin can’t handle it.

Anyone exposed is at risk of getting burnt and should use sunscreen. Even if you are a person who typically doesn’t burn, it’s likely you will burn without sun-screen there.

No doubt you will want to spend plenty of time in the sun. With this guide, you’ll find plenty to do. The last thing you want to do is spend your vacation uncomfortable and in pain.

The people who live in Ecuador have adjusted to the amount of exposure. Since they are used to it, you will have a hard time finding sun-screen in Ecuador.

If you find it, it’ll be expensive. That’s why we suggest bringing some of your own.

4. Language in Ecuador

You might assume that since most Spanish speaking countries also speak English that they do in Ecuador. But that’s not the case. While the people who do also speak English speak it well, most Ecuadorians don’t speak it at all.

Obviously, it would be best if you know Spanish, but if you don’t’ you’ll want to make sure you know enough to get by. If you need something and can’t find someone who speaks English, you can still communicate.

You’ll probably want to know how to ask where the bathroom is, for directions, and some basic pleasantries. Knowing these things can make your trip a lot less stressful.

5. Toilet Tolls

Unlike in the U.S, most restrooms aren’t actually public. Most of the time when you come across a bathroom in Ecuador, you have to pay to use it. While the prices vary, typically it’s 5 cents for men and 15 cents for women.

Also, a stark difference between U.S bathroom and bathrooms in Ecuador is that they don’t always give you toilet paper. A lot of the attendants in women’s bathrooms will give them a little bit, but men don’t typically get any at all.

To make your bathroom visits more comfortable, you should carry some tissue around with you.

6. Don’t Drink the Water

Unfortunately, the tap water in Ecuador isn’t drinkable. You can’t just go up to a water fountain or stick your head under a faucet without risking a slew of health problems.

One of your options is to buy a large water jug of purified water to keep in your hotel room. From there you can fill up smaller bottles to take to drink throughout the day.

Your other option is a personal purifier. There are a few that you can fit in your pocket or your purse to give you some piece of mind without having to lug around water bottles.

7. Watch your things

Safety should always be a concern when it comes to traveling outside of the country. When people are traveling they tend to be easy targets because they aren’t aware of their surroundings.

While in Ecuador you will want to keep an eye on your things. Travelers already have a target on their backs. If you turn away for a second you could lose all your stuff.

You can also ask the people who work where you are staying what you need to look out for in that specific area.

If you stay alert, you shouldn’t have a problem on your vacation.
