Philadelphia Food – Hoagies
OK, I’ll be totally honest, I have heard of hoagies before. I knew they were sandwiches, but until I arrived to Philly and see that this is their founding city, I never knew that.
I am a huge lover of sandwiches. And when I ordered mine and saw the fresh, crispy bread crackle under the knife of the maker. And all the yummy ingredients placed inside. I knew I was in for a serious treat!
What are Hoagies?
- It is a type of sandwich that consists of a long roll of Italian bread split widthwise. You can do it into two pieces if it’s large enough. Then it’s filled with a variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables, seasonings, and sauces.
- Italians working at the World War I–era shipyard in Philadelphia introduced the sandwich by putting various meats, cheeses, and lettuce between two slices of bread. This became known as the “Hog Island” sandwich; shortened to “Hoggies”, then the “hoagie”.
- Former Philadelphia mayor (and later Pennsylvania governor) Ed Rendell declared the hoagie the “Official Sandwich of Philadelphia”.
- A local Philadelphia variation on the hoagie is the zep made in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
