This urban area is about 30 per cent of the Danish population, and in 2013 it was mentioned as the happiest capital city on the planet in the World Happiness Report.

Copenhagen Travel – Fun Facts

The name ‘Copenhagen’ is the English spelling of the Dutch word ‘København’ which can be translated as ‘merchant’s harbour’. There has been an urban settlement here since at least the eleventh century, and the fact that there is a natural harbour here meant it became a popular trading area for the Vikings.

The Little Mermaid is the most well-known tourist attraction in Copenhagen, and it is often used on postcards. This statue weights 175kg, and it is 1.25 metres in height – it looks bigger in photos. This statue that is so associated with the city was unveiled in 1913, and it inspired by the tales of Danish author Hans Christian Anderson. The Little Mermaid can be found at Langelinie Promenade.

There is over 8km of sandy beach within easy reach of the city centre – there are also a number of outdoor swimming baths to choose from as well. Bellevue Beach is the most popular of them all, and this is the perfect place to go during the summer. Amager Beach Park is on an artificial island, and this is worth visiting as well.
