How to Travel to Nicaragua Without Spending a Small Fortune

Traveling in Central America can get a bit expensive, especially if you are traveling with your family. That’s why it is important to play around with your options to figure out how to save some money.

Here are some tips that you can use on your next trip to Nicaragua so your family can have a great vacation without spending a fortune:

1. Don’t do guided tours –  You don’t need to pay for expensive guided tours. For example you can visit the Cathedral in Leon, which by the way is the largest Cathedral in Central America, and take a tour of it on your own and climb to the roof top to get an amazing skyline view of the city for only $2.

Since this was one of the most damaged cities during the civil war it is a great place to learn about its history. The city has ‘Gallery of Heroes’ , a small museum that shows photos and objects that commemorate Leon’s fallen revolutionary heroes.

2. Take a fun – but Cheap tour – In the case of a city like Granada where the beautiful buildings and the colors are the best thing to be seen, instead of taking a guided tour, take a horse carriage tour, the driver will tell you some fun facts about the places you pass by and will charge $10 an hour, half than a guide.

3. Volcano tours – Another popular place to visit in Nicaragua is Masaya volcano. Again don’t be fooled by guides offering their services, there is nothing to guide, the path is well marked and I assure you, you won’t miss the crater. It is only $10 for the whole family. There are even some places for a picnic and a small museum where you will learn everything there is to be known about the volcano.

4. Horseback is cheap in Nicaragua – Then there is Ometepe Island, a place that you can explore on horseback for only $3 an hour. Kids will love it and you can use your horse to get to the Santo Domingo Beach for a fun picnic with the family.
