Spotlight Costa Rica – Hotel El Silencio del Campo
Posted by: | Comments
Last week I wrote about a great hotel in Arenal but as I said there are many great hotels in the area and here is another one. Hotel el Silenio del Campo is a beautiful hotel that consists of a series of cabins spread out along beautiful gardens.
My experience in this place was great. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The restaurant has a good ambiance and the food is very tasty. The room’s decoration is inviting and warm, but most importantly they are clean.
This gets even better because within the property you will find hot springs. This is a perfect place to hang out and relax as you watch the beautiful Arenal volcano.

Here’s what people have to say about them and if you don’t believe them, I dare you to try it!
We booked this hotel after reading the reviews in Trip advisor. We stayed here for 3 nights and loved this place. Front desk personnel are very helpful in suggesting things to do, places to go and with the bookings. We had to leave the hotel pretty early to drive to San Jose airport and the front desk had arranged for our breakfast and delivered it to our room.
The food at the restaurant is great. Dinner menu is limited but they have a fast-food menu that had good options. We loved the hot spring within the property its very convenient. The rooms are nice and big.
And
This is an excellent choice for nearly any travel style. Somehow, El Silencio del Campo has figured out how to merge the natural Costa Ricanoutdoors with the clean, quiet, and spacious but cozy feel of a modern resort. The on-site hot springs are a wonderful place to relax after a long day of adventure and there are several other hot springs nearby. The staff was incredibly pleasant and personable. They answered all my wife and my questions (we had a lot) and helped us select the best activities for our vacation.
They also pass the “true test” of a great hotel… my wife continues to talk about it even weeks later!

Weekly Travel Tip – How to Learn More About Local Culture
Posted by: | CommentsThe best way to get to know the local culture from the country or town you’re visiting is not to go with a big tour group. It would be better to get a local, private guide. That’s because they will know more about what goes on in the town. Also big transportation companies usually don’t have staff from the specific town you are in. That means they won’t know as much about the area as a local one.
Another thing that will help you get a better experience is to shop at small grocery stores, pharmacies and outdoor markets. In them you will not only meet the locals but you will also get inexpensive souvenirs. Finally make friends with the hotel’s staff, they can give you lots of information about what the locals like to do for fun.

Spotlight Costa Rica – Arenal Nayara Hotel & Gardens
Posted by: | Comments
In Costa Rica there is this beautiful volcano called Arenal. It is permanently active and gives great shows almost every night. So why not spend some time in the area at a safe distance.
Many hotels have been established in the area because of its natural attraction but for my taste Arenal Nayara Hotel & Gardens is one of the best. The rooms have great views and most of them have a porch with an amazingly beautiful view of the volcano. In the porch you will find a private jacuzzi. The rooms are also very comfortable but above all clean.
About the staff what I can say is that they are always willing to help and checking that everything is okay without intruding. The food is also delicious and the size of the dishes is nice.
I highly recommend this place it is great. So give it a try.

Here’s what people have to say about them and if you don’t believe them, I dare you to try it!
This hotel was outstanding. Each “room” is a free-standing casita with incredible landscaping. The rooms have an Asian-type layout and did not feel crowded or cramped. There are soaking jet tubs on the porches with landscaping that allows you to see out, but not others to see in. The staff was wonderful and welcoming. One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in.
And
Arenal Nayara is the by far the best resort I’ve ever visited. We stayed here for the first half of our week-long honeymoon and in hindsight, would’ve stayed longer. The food was delicious, staff top-notch and the accommodations spectacular, not to mention the fabulous view of the Arenal Volcano. We also opted for hot stone massages which took place in a private, open air villa. The outdoor shower and hot tub on the private deck made our stay romantic and relaxing. I would definitely stay at this resort again!

Weekly Travel Tip – Enjoying Foreign Food
Posted by: | CommentsAs crazy as it may seem this week’s tip is about enjoying foreign food. When we travel to a different country we tend to look for what is familiar like Mc Donald’s. In this case the advice would be to try the local dishes and not comparing them to the ones at home. Instead enjoy every new flavor.
I know that some dishes might look a bit weird but you will be pleasantly surprised in most of the cases.

5 Can’t Miss-This in Guatemala

Tikal National Park is located in Petén and its name means “place of voices”. Nowadays, it is the biggest known and studied Mayan City. The park has an area of 576 . It was declared a Human Heritage Patrimony by UNESCO in 1979. It consists of a group of temples and plazas scattered around, but the most popular ones are:
Major Plaza: It is surrounded by Temples I and II, the North and Central Acropolis, as well as a big range of wakes and altars.
Temple I: Known also as Big Jaguar Temple, it was built around year 700. Its crest reaches 45 meters high above the Major Plaza.
Temple II: It is also known as Masks Temple. You will find it very close to the Big Plaza by the west, with 38mts. high. The temple was built around 700 A.C.
North Acropolis: It is a religious area within the ceremonial complex of Tikal. It is the most complete individual construction to this date in the area.
Central Acropolis: It is formed by a small courtyard on different levels with large and low buildings called “palaces”.
Temple IV: With its 70mts. it is the highest structure of Tikal and is called “Two-headed Snake Temple”. Here the visitors can go up to the crest base and have the most beautiful sight of Tikal.
Big Pyramid Plaza or Lost World: It is one of the oldest monumental complexes of Tikal. Its architecture, science and art are that of the second century before our era and the fourth after our era. It is also a very important astronomical complex.
Antigua was once the third capital of this country. It was founded in 1543 and named Ciudad de Santiago de Los Caballeros de Guatemala. After many earthquakes and floods, the telluric movement of 1773 finally destroyed it. Despite this, it is now one of the major touristic attractions of Guatemala. It is a colonial architectural jewel, which keeps its characteristics as if time had stopped. That is why it was designated a by UNESCO “World Heritage Site”by UNESCO in 1979. Its highlights include:
The Old Cathedral: It was built between 1543 and 1680. It has wooden columns, a body and a bulrush, that had to be rebuilt after the Santa Marta Earthquake in 1773. The title of “Metropolitan” was given to it in 1743 by the “Papa Benedicto XIV”. Also in the back, visitors can visit its ruins.
Capitan-General’s Palace: It is located in front of Central Park. It has a two level and a two-tiered arched facade. During the centuries XVI to XVII it was home to the representative of the king.
Noble City Hall Palace: This construction has kept its original design since 1743. Presently, it hosts the municipal authorities’ offices and the Museum of Antique Books.
Church and Convent La Merced: The facade of this church is without a doubt the best example of baroque style. The fountain inside the Convent’s ruins is the largest that remains in La Antigua Guatemala.
Church of San Francisco el Grande: It is surrounded by a wall with battlements. Here is where the body of Santo Hermano Pedro de San José de Betancurt is kept, as well as a museum where relics, clothes, and objects that he used are on permanent exhibit.
Agua Volcano: It is a classic visit for those who love to climb. It is the sixth highest volcano of the country, and yet it has easy access and a camp.
This department is cold in the highlands and warm on the coastal area. The languages that are spoken here are Spanish, Quiché and Mam. Quetzaltenango is settled in an extensive valley surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. Its inhabitants still have the old traditions of the Mayan-Quiche, mixed up with a colonial past and dynamic modern life. It is considered the second most important city of Guatemala. Its highlights are:
Municipal Theatre: This Neoclassical building is an architectural jewel. It has a capacity of 1,050 seats. The stage was built in 1916.
Central America Park: It is located in the center of the city. The park is surrounded by an impressive monumental complex from which the baroque façade of the Church stands out.
Holy Spirit Cathedral: It is settled in the west side of the Centro America Park. The complex has two structures: the ruins of the façade of the Holy Spirit Church (1535-1898) at the bottom, and the Cathedral of the Diócesis de Los Altos from 1899.
Chicabal Lake: It is located on the volcano summit with the same name. To get there, all you need to do is a short, easy walk.
Volcanoes: In Quetzaltenango there are six volcanoes that offer great climbing opportunities. They are: Santa María, Santiaguito, Cerro Quemado, Siete Orejas, Chicabal and Lacandón.
Hot Springs: Due to the volcanic manifestations in the area you will find many natural warm, sulfured bathes. The most accessible are the Almolonga, Cantel and Aguas Amargas baths.
Its complete name is San Francisco Panajachel. This is a pre-colonial town of Kakchiquel origin, settled next to the river with the same name and on the lakeshore of Atitlán. It witnessed the final battle between Spaniards and their Kakchiquel allies against the Tzujiles.Currently, this town is located amid large coffee plantations, gardens and vegetable orchards.
It is the most important center of the area. The reason? It hosts most of the hotels, restaurants, disco clubs, recreational areas and commercial stores. It is great for doing some handicraft shopping. But what really makes this place stand out is Lake Atitlan, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
West of Panajachel in the San Buenaventura Valley, a natural wildlife reserve of 120 acres and one butterfly reserve can be found . The forest has many traits and an organic coffee plantation.
What you will find here is a beautiful town with a population of Afro-Caribbean origins. It is located in the Dulce River outlet to the Caribbean Sea. It can only be accessed by sea from Puerto Barrios, on private boats.
Holy Week, the feast day in honor of San Isidro Labrador (November 26) and the feast day in honor of Guadalupe Virgin (December 12) are magnificent opportunities to appreciate the folklore of the Garífuna population of this place. The combination of beautiful beaches and warm people make this place a great getaway.
Plus, there is no shortage of hotels in Guatemala that will make your stay just as memorable as the locations themselves.

Posted by: | Comments
Where else in the world can you see an active volcano with a nightly lava show, visit a national park where monkeys and other wildlife creatures welcome you with open arms, and that has over 800 miles of amazing coastline? Costa Rica!
This tiny country, known to have 5% of the world’s bio diversity, has so much to offer the you’ll be wishing you simply moved here! I did:)
On top of all the beautiful places, Costa Rica’s accommodations are unique with a personality matching the country.
Top Five Must Do’s When Visiting Costa Rica
1. Volcano Arenal – Every day and every night this magnificent volcano spews out lava that calmly flows off the side of it. You can safely do the volcano walk to witness this phenomena for yourself. Or, why don’t you just hang out in any of the naturally heated hot springs at the base watching it with a cocktail in hand?
2. Poas Volcano – If you don’t have a chance to visit Arenal, no worries. Less than 1 hour from San Jose is another active volcano – Poas Volcano. What’s so cool about this place? For starters, you can walk up to the crater and look down on it’s boiling crater full of sulfur!
3. Manaul Antonio National Park – The most accessible park in Costa Rica that is so ripe with wildlife, it will be a miracle if you don’t have a close-encounter with a monkey, or sloth or iguana! Plus, to end your day with a reward, hang out on one of the pristine white sanded beaches inside the park, while monkeys fight with you over your food!
4. The Gold Coast Beaches – Costa Rica, a country that has over 800 miles of coastline. It’s hard to go wrong with beach locations. However, on the top of the list are the Gold Coast beaches located in the Guanacaste area: Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Flamingo, Conchal and Ocatol are some of the best choices for fun!
5. Corcovado National Park – This park, located all the way south in Costa Rica in the Osa Peninsula, has been called by National Geographic ‘The most biologically diverse place on earth’. There are over 100 mammal species, 700 birds, and practically an infinite number of insects that are being discovered daily living in this gorgeous rain forest.
So come for a week, or a month or a year. You’ll never run out of things to do:)

Spotlight Costa Rica – Espadilla Cabins
Posted by: | Comments
Last week I introduced to you Espadilla Hotel but I forgot to talk about Espadilla Cabins. You will find it a few steps away from the hotel. The Cabins have their own private entrance to the beach which is 50m down the road. Some of the things you will find here are: a private parking lot and a private biological reserve but of course they share the tennis court and the pool with the hotel.
Espadilla cabins is a complex of 16 cabins. They have ceiling fans, a kitchenette a refrigerator and hot water. The Cabins are nicely decorated and very clean. The surrounding gardens are beautiful and there are lounge chairs available. The staff is very helpful and accommodating. There is no restaurant but there are a lot of great restaurants in the area.

Here’s what people have to say about them and if you don’t believe them, I dare you to try it!
This place is located a very short walk from Manuel Antonio park and very close to the restaurants and shops on the beach. The price was quite reasonable and the rooms were clean. Staff was easily reachable by e-mail, which was nice to book the room and save the long distance phone call. Staff was extremely helpful and followed up to make sure everything was ok. The air conditioning unit worked extremely well, best of any place we stayed in Costa Rica. If I ever go back I would definitely stay of Cabinas Espadilla!
And
Me and my fiance stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. The location was a 1 minute walk to Manual Antonio beach and a 2 minute walk to the national park. The markets and restaurants were very close by and had great food and stuff to purchase. The hotel pool was always very clean, outdoors and lounge chairs were always available. The hotel was very clean, we got towels each day, had AC, coffee, and we got a key for a safe. The bathroom was very clean and came with hand soap and shampoo. I loved this place and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good place to stay for a reasonable price in a good location. We didn’t spend much time in the hotel because we spend most of our time on adventure tours, but the time we did spend here in the evenings was totally worth the money!
