Banana Azul – Adorable and a Must Stay in Puerto Viejo
Puerto Viejo is probably one of the cutest places to visit on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. It’s vegetation, tropical jungle, laid-back culture, gorgeous beaches, great surf and peacefulness is making this area a popular hot spot.
Amongst the jungle lodges and small hotels, Banana Azul Hotel outshines them all.

9 reasons why you HAVE TO stay at Banana Azul while in Puerto Viejo:
1. Location, Location, Location – this is one of the only hotels that is literally on the beach!

2. Pool – again, Banana Azul tops the charts with being one of the only hotels in the area with a pool!

3. Prices – the rooms are so adorable, most have amazing views yet the prices are still below $100 per night – including breakfast
4. Friendliness – I have been emailing back and forth with David, the manager. Normally, the emails with hotels are friendly and when you get there, they aren’t as friendly! But David was even more fun in person and he had a gorgeous welcome basket for me – THANK YOU!

5. Chill out time – I love hammocks and this hotel is literally littered with them everywhere – in your room, the dining room, the beach and in the yard.

6. Welcome drink – you gotta love when they welcome you with a drink of your choice to get you in the mood!
7. Proximity – It’s walking distance to Puerto Viejo, but still far away from the noise. The only sounds you’ll hear are the animals in the jungle around you.
8. Convenience – the tour company is right on premises, so you don’t have to worry about organizing anything in town, you can do it right there!
9. Fun – I ended up spending the night in the dining room chatting with people and then an even more pleasant time swaying on my hammock on my private porch – it was definitely paradise!

Monteverde’s Famous Night Tour – Animals Galore!
What’s all the buzz about night tours and nocturnal animals? Not sure, but when you arrive to Monteverde that’s all you hear about (Aside the regular stuff about reserves, cloud forests and ziplining).
Since I can’t miss out on the thing-to-do, I signed up as well.
I went with my absolute favorite company – Desafio Tours – to Hidden Valley farm in Monteverde.
The guides here were extremely knowledgeable. Not only did they spot animals that there was no way to ever see, but they knew so much about them and how to handle them, but still with the outmost respect.
Animals you’ll stumble upon on your Night Tour in Monteverde:
Tarantula!
Ok – I know – yuck! But let me tell you. This girl was sooo huge, that it was mind blowing. And our guide knew how to get her out of her house for her to show off her furry figure.

Coati Mundo
These animals, closest relatives to the raccoon – are like squirrels back in the US. They are everywhere!

Daddy Long Legs
Did you know that they are not spiders? I didn’t, until I was explained that they in fact don’t bite (like spiders) and they DON’T have 2 parts to their bodies like spiders. They are actually very harmless indeed.
I still wouldn’t join them on their slumber party.

Sleeping bird
Look, the bird is standing on one leg and has its head buried inside it’s body. Doesn’t look very comfortable to me at all.

The whole tour lasted about 1.5 hours. Which in my opinion was just enough time. Plus, the price is so right – $30 per person and your kids will learn about a whole new world out there!

Hotels of Monteverde, Costa Rica Part II – Valle Campanas
Character and style are what makes your stay memorable and special. Especially when you’re traveling with kids, the majority of your time is spent at the hotel, either getting ready to go out, or cleaning up, or relaxing or simply unwinding.

I found this to be a perfect fit with the adorable Valle Campanas Cabins in Monteverde. These tiny cabins are located on a large property that was once a working sugar mill. It’s owned by true Monteverdians! The family literally dates back to over a century when sugar was the main source of industry. But they haven’t fully abandoned their sugar roots.
What makes Valle Campanas Cabins my first choice for families visiting Monteverde:
1. Cabins – For an super price your family stays in a wooden cabin with separate bedrooms, living room, multiple bathrooms and balcony. Plus, with a small yard for the kids to go nuts in and great views.

2. Uniqueness – this adorable hotel is on an old sugar farm and they have a working sugar mill where Reina, the owner, makes delicious sugar cane juice for you right in front of your family.

It’s so fun to watch and then drink up!

3. Views – standing on your balcony you get to see the entire Tilaran mountain region!

4. Organic and fresh Ingredients – most of the food is grown right on their farm. You can take a tour and see for yourself and best of all, enjoy morning breakfast made from fresh ingredients.

5. Host – Reina is great. She treats you like you are family and being surrounded by her family and hospitality makes such a difference!
You can stay in a three bedroom cabin for less than $150. How can you beat that!
