National Aquarium of Cuba in Havana – Things to Do in Cuba with Kids

Havana is one of the largest cities I’ve visited with my family in ages. So big it totally surprised me. A lot of it is walking around, checking out museums and architecture – or better putting it  BOOORRRIIIINNNGGG for kids. Traveling with kids can be challenging, super rewarding, but also needs creativity.

So to appease my son, I promised him if he would do some exploring that mama wanted, we’d head over to the National Aquarium of Cuba for a day of fish, dolphins and sea lions. Needless to say, I was able to enjoy myself for a good part of our time in Havana.

Dolphin shows going on all day – which is a good thing. As with most of Havana, there is very little money to upkeep the actual aquarium and many of the exhibits are non existent.

The aquarium at one point was beautiful but it is in desperate need of repair. When we were there they didn’t have any water running in bathrooms, kitchens and water fountains.

Plus, we wanted to eat lunch there and they literally didn’t have any food to feed us except for fries. Nothing else.

The shows were fun mainly cause in Cuba you can do what you can NEVER do in the US. For instance, pick a random child from the audience and have a dolphin ride her around.

Dolphin time. This was fun.

Every kid who did this, had to kiss a dolphin. If they didn’t everyone looked at them as though they were weird.

The shows were creative and fun.

This was actually my favorite thing to do since we never got this close to a sea lion before.

The price per person is $10 entrance – for foreigners. Locals are practically free

The shows are included. However, the animal interactions such as the dolphin and sea lion fun was $3 each.

A shame that the aquarium is in desperate need of repair. It makes me concerned about how the animals are cared for and if their enclosures are also in need of repair.
