A Traditional Bed and Breakfast in Antigua Guatemala – Chez Daniel

Few places through out Central America can fall into the category of a B&B. And let me tell you, I’m a huge fan of Bed and Breakfasts. It’s usually my chosen mode of traveling throughout the United States and whenever there is an option in Latin America, I always chose it. Chez Daniel is definitely the first true and traditional style B&B in Antigua, Guatemala that I have visited!

My family and I visited this adorable hotel for breakfast one day. And, I don’t say this often at all, but there is something magical in this place.

unique bed and breakfast

Yes the place is truly quaint, large rooms with the biggest bathrooms I have yet to see in Antigua. And yes the property is large and cozy with amazing views of the volcanoes.

But that’s not what did it for me. The reaction my children had to the place. My baby doesn’t like to go with anyone, immediately he went to Maria Elena, the owner, and simply enjoyed being in her company while playing on the swings and watching his older brother climb trees. My husband and I actually had some free time to ourselves, which we didn’t really know what to do with.

My older son isn’t one for staying too long in places, but when we had to bid our farewells he refused to budge! Kept saying ‘can we go after I do this or that.’ Truly the first time that it took us over 30 minutes to leave because of my kids and not because I wanted to stay and chat (which I did).

Another unique trait to Chez Daniel is Daniel, the owner, himself. Daniel is a professional photographer and his photos grace the walls from the breakfast dining area to all the rooms.

During our continental breakfast, we literally stayed way longer than necessary as we studied, admired and looked over the photos that depict Guatemala’s life.

Coming here turned out to be more of an experience for my family rather than just another place to visit. And that in itself makes it all the more worthwhile to stay here!

My husband and I are going to Antigua, Guatemala in September for 10 days and trying to decide where to stay. We are attending a church conference and will be walking to the center each day. I love reading of your experiences. Chez Daniel seems homey and real, then of course there is the choice of hotel with all kinds of amenities, but 3 x the money. We are in our late 50’s and simple people. Any other thoughts of Chez Daniel? Thank you

    • Hi Audrey,

Chez Daniel is great, very homey. It isn’t walking distance though to Central park, but a very quick tuk tuk or Taxi drive. There are tons of lovely, tiny little hotels in Antigua center that you can walk from and still quiet. Can you write me in my contact form and we can talk via email.
