There are tons of things to see & do in each Costa Rican region and it can get a bit hard to decide which ones to visit. Here is a list of Cahuita’s highlights that will help you decide:

Cahuita National Park

  • A beautiful coastal park known for its living coral reefs, abundant marine life and white-faced capuchin monkeys. Take the beautiful path along the beach which meanders through mangroves and a tropical forest.
  • One of two living coral reefs in the South Caribbean is found here. Beginning where Playa Blanca narrows, it extends around Cahuita Point and ends before Puerto Vargas

Aviarios del Caribe (The Sloth Rescue Center)

This Rescue Center is a privately-owned wildlife sanctuary near Cahuita. Their main objective, aside from caring for the growing number of resident sloths (currently more than 75), is to educate the public about sloth habitats, life cycles and conservation.

Hitoy – Cerere Biological Reserve

This is one of the most rugged reserves in Costa Rica. Perfect for hiking and adventurous souls.

Wildlife Viewing

You don’t have to go far to have close encounters with howler and white-faced capuchin monkeys, sloths, toucans, iguanas, butterflies and tons of other fauna. And if you can’t get enough strolling around town, head over to Cahuita National Park.

All of Cahuita’s beautiful beaches have been awarded with an Ecological Blue Flag award:

Playa Negra

On the north end of Cahuita, this black sanded beach is great for swimming.

Playa Blanca

A long, white sanded beach in Cahuita National Park, great for swimming and snorkeling.

Puerto Vargas

Also located in Cahuita National Park, this beach is often deserted and calm.

Butterfly Gardens

Check out the local butterfly gardens with over 15 different species.

Cacao Trails

This is a place for everyone. It’s a mixed medley of: chocolate museum, botanical gardens, wildlife sanctuary, Indian museum and organic farm. If that’s not enough join a guided tour for a deeper learning experience, or lounge out by the beautiful pool and eat well at the on-site restaurant specializing in Caribbean cuisine.
