Here are some interesting museums and ruins of Antigua to visit:


Colonial Art Museum (Museo de Arte Colonial)

The museum is in a beautiful colonial home. The art is of Colonial focus with sculptures, murals, furniture and paintings by Mexican artists.

Casa Santa Domingo Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Casa Santo Domingo)

The site itself is an impressive, restored building which once was the largest and wealthiest monastery and church built in 1666. It was destroyed by the 18th century earthquakes. Inside are several museum and archeological sites with two well-preserved crypts: 1. Crypto del Calvario, has a Crucifixion mural, 2. The other harbors two graves with human bones.

Casa Popeonoe

Originally built in 1636 by Don Luis de los Infantes Mendoza and abandoned during the 1773 earthquake. In 1929, Dr. Wilson Popeonoe and his wife bought it and painstakingly restored it to this amazing cultural monument. Although they have died, their daughters still live here.

Old Book Museum (Museo del Libro Antiguo)

Here you can see a replica of Guatemala’s first printing press, 1660s, and some of Guatemala’s first printed books.

Where is it? North side of central park

Schedule: 9 – 4 p.m. Tue – Fri, 9 – noon and 2 – 4 p.m. Sat and Sun
Admission: Mon – Sat $1.50, Sun donations

Santiago Museum (Museo de Santiago)

Housed in the former jail, this small museum holds the mermaid statues that once adorned the central fountain and some old weapons and the canons from Castillo San Felipe.

The Azotea Cultural Center

This is a 3-in-1 museum. You’ll get great insider view of coffee and its production, plus a free cup of java to go. Next, you’ll enter an exhibit rich with Mayan artifacts, instruments, paintings and masks. And the last, but not the least, you get to see a beautiful display of Antigua Valley’s colorful costumes and crafts.
