PinExt Escape the Typical in Montezuma

By travel writer Bradley Fink

Trips to Spain have little in common with vacations in Central America. Spain is known for its cities, its history, its culture and cuisine. In Galicia, for instance, you’ll find plenty of things to see, and you can dine at a wide and diverse selection of Galicia restaurants. In Costa Rica, on the other hand, you’ll find natural landscapes, and endless stretches of tropical beaches. And so while you may fancy a trip to Spain, Central America is pure vacation.

If you really want some peace and quiet, and to stay off of the “gringo trail”, then from San Jose, Costa Rica, you can make your way to the tropical enclave known as Montezuma. Montezuma is small, remote and idyllic, where escape artists go to lay back, relax, and forget the rest of the world. Here you won’t find any roads with noisy traffic jams, nor any high-rise hotels filled with the typical weekend tourists. Montezuma is truly a place for couples who want to travel alone.

But you don’t have to sit still in Montezuma. In fact, the enclave is a great place for outdoor sporting. Its generally known for its yoga studios, its health-food cafes, its surf shops and its spas. Tour guides can lead you to the best local spots for snorkeling, scuba diving, sport fishing, horseback riding, and hiking to waterfalls in the rainforest. Or, if rest is in order, you can just lay back in a hammock and listen to the ocean crash at the shore.

One of the best places to grab a snack is at the Sano Banana Hotel. This sits right on the only commercial “road” that runs through Montezuma. The kitchen serves a wide variety of fresh and local dishes, as well as fruit smoothies, “fresh yogurt creations”, espresso drinks and cold treats. For a more eclectic or romantic meal, the Sano Banana’s sister establishment, The YlangYlang Beach Resort, serves main courses such as Asian Rice noodles A La Coconut Crème, and Sauteed Shrimp Pasta Fettuccini.

While Montezuma is by no means easy to get to, once you are there you’ll feel relaxed, and be glad to have made the trip. From San Jose there are several flights a day into Tambor (30 minutes), and from Tambor you can take a half-hour taxi south to Montezuma. There are also less convenient ways to arrive by speedboat, bus or car.
