Travel Experta’s Interesting Facts – Lake Izabal, Guatemala
Guatemala’s largest lake, Lago Izabal, is located in an isolated, stunningly beautiful, forested section of the country, which has only recently been discovered by tourists. The river port town of Fronteras, commonly called Río Dulce, is the only major settlement in the area, and is located at the narrow section where Lago Izabal becomes the Río Dulce, which flows northeast toward Livingston and the sea.

The lake is a gentle expanse of water rich in perch, tarpon and other game fish. In it you will get the chance to take a look at the endangered fresh-water manatee or sea cow, a mammal that can weigh up to a ton.
This area had not been explored by tourists as much as Tikal or Antigua. I can asure you won’t see a lot of travelers around.
