Annually when December 7 comes, a large effigy of devil is being burned in Antigua, Guatemala at exactly 6 p.m. Crowds gather at the Barrio de la Concepcion as they watch the devil being burned while enjoying music in a community-sponsored celebration.

Guatemalan’s believe that the devil resides insides their houses or in the junk that piled up in one corner all year long, casting misfortunes on helpless mortals and burning the devil is a way to expel all the evil in people’s houses and lives.

Quema del Diablo is practiced mainly in the central of the country including Guatemala City and La Antigua Guatemala.

• This event is particularly popular in children as they delight themselves with bonfires and firecrackers.

• Burning of the Devil on the night before the celebration of the feast of Immaculate Conception also marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Guatemala.
