Photo Friday – A Fortress in Guatemala, Who Would Have Thought?

Fortresses, Pirates? In Guatemala? What for? I’m still not quite sure, however, at one point Guatemala’s opening from the Atlantic Ocean through Rio Dulce in the Izabal department was a major port where Pirates have bombed and attacked and pilferaged for centuries!
The first fort was built in the 1500′s. Since then, it went under 5 different remakes and ownerships. All had to deal with the Spaniards and Brits at each others throats at all times.

Today it is a lovely, preserved museum full of inquiring minds and great views. The price tag is a whole $3 for foreigners. Although, judging from my son’s experience, I can tell you that a 6 year old is now more knowledgeable about pirates, canons and fortresses!
