Spotlight Guatemala – Tour in Chichicastenango, Central America’s Largest Market

By Marina K. Villatoro · Monday, December 07th, 2009

chichi Spotlight Guatemala Tour in Chichicastenango, Central Americas Largest Market

The Chichicastenango Tour is the best way to get to know the traditions of Guatemala. In this tour you will be taken to Chichicastenango (Quiche, Guatemala) in a private shuttle. Once you are there, you will have the opportunity to see what daily life is for its native people. But most importantly you will have the chance to visit to its wonderful market which by the way is known as Central America’s largest artisans market. In it you will find all kinds of fresh vegetables, fruits,  farm animals, tons of flowers and all kinds of handcrafts made of colorful fabrics, wood, ceramics and even jade at a great price.

There is also the church, which from the inside is very different from the ones you see in Antigua Guatemala. As soon as you step foot in it you will notice that the decoration is very unique. It’s nothing like the ones we commonly see. This 400 year old church was built over and old Mayan temple, as a matter of fact the steps in front of it are part of the original temple.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn a bit more about Guatemala’s traditions.

Here’s what people have to say about them and if you don’t believe them, I dare you to try it!

Chichi is a must if you love markets. The colorful handmade crafts sold to tourists are fascinating but there’s also a local market where the locals trade beans, chicken, pigs etc. If you’re in Guatemala it’s well worth taking an entire day to visit this fabulous place. You can also be sure that this is where you’ll find the best prices in Guatemala and the most variety of any locally made products. The first time I was there in the mid-nineties, I bought a hammock, three carpets, two wooden Mayan masks, three handmade belts, a knife, three small statues and a large handbag to carry all this stuff (of course, I’m forgetting lots of other stuff) Total cost: less than $200.

And

Loved the Sunday Market, great place to get great gifts CHEAP….Don’t let them fool you with the first price they give….play around a little offer a low price and say “Take it or leave it” they will say “No” but when you begin to walk away, they will say “Okay take it”, it is so fun, bargaining with the town people. But of course when you can afford to give a little more, go for it, they need it more than you do.

Oh I love markets and traditional culture tours. This sounds amazing. How are the churches decorated differently specifically? Do they use different symbols or materials?

Hey Fly Girl,

They use a lot of Maya symbols, and use a lot of their traditions, but with a heavy catholic influence.
