Did You Know That Flowers Come by the Truckloads in Guatemala – I Didn't!

By Marina K. Villatoro · Friday, September 11th, 2009

Guatemala is a country so diverse that at every step I find myself asking am I really in a country that is 80% poor? I have been to some other countries where poverty is predominant, but I must admit none are as colorful or full of resources.

Did You Know That Flowers Come by the Truckloads in Guatemala I Didn't!

One of the most amazing things in Guatemala and something that I have found myself not being able to live without anymore are fresh flowers. And I’m talking by the truck loads!

No matter what happens, I try to make it over to the market day on Saturdays where there are tons of vendors selling all kinds of flowers from carnations to daisies to my favorite: ROSES. For less than one dollar you can buy a dozen of beautiful, all colored roses!

They are this cheap because these are the leftovers. If you can believe it, the ‘good ones’ are exported. How much better can they be?

If leftover flowers look so good, I'll have leftover daisies and roses every day.

I am with Maria! I would take leftover flowers any day if they were as beautiful as the ones in the picture. That is a great photo!

Fresh flowers are one of those things I don't get so often any more–between Tim's job loss and return to school, we had to cut back a bit–if we had $1 roses, I'd be all about it!
That's why I'm especially enjoying your photo today :)

Great shot! I have always wanted to go to Guatamala. Now I know where to go.

Those flowers are beautiful – it reminds me of the highlands of Kenya by Lake Naivasha which is also a major rose growing area under big glass houses – they grow for all the major supermarkets. My brother in law and sister worked out there for a few years and we visited them there.

12 for a DOLLAR? That is the ultimate bargain. My living room would be a flower shop.
