Can You Guess What This Place Is In Antigua?

By Marina K. Villatoro · Friday, September 04th, 2009

This is so out of character for me, but I just have to show this place because it’s hard to believe!

Can You Guess What This Place Is In Antigua?

Antigua is the last remaining ‘TRUE’ colonial city in Latin America. The majority of the architecture dates back to 1600’s and the municipality does all it can to maintain the beauty of it.

So naturally, any major franchise who wants to immerse themselves into the thriving market of Antigua will buy a classical colonial home with the gorgeous courtyards and fountains and all. So can you guess who bought this gem?

Who is that sitting at other of the fountain surrounded by kids?

Ronald McDonald!

That’s right! McDonalds has the best property in Antigua!

We were invited here for a birthday party, otherwise I wouldn’t be caught dead in this place, and we literally dropped our jaws in complete awe and beauty of it!

Sometimes you just have to visit a place to see for yourself! I must admit, that while I NEVER visit macdonalds at home, I have been known to when travelling. Not often, but sometimes you just can't face another curry etc and want something a little more familiar like fries. We visited one in Istanbul after my husband had his wallet stolen. We weren't feeling very pro-Turkey that night!

We try to introduce our kids to new foods while traveling but we are not against McDonald's or other comfort food once in awhile. I would want to head to this McDonald's just to see the beautiful grounds!

4

The great thing about visiting McDonald's around the world is the regional specialties. That is certainly one nice McDonalds!

Don't know whether to laugh or cry at the thought of Ronald McD residing in such a beautiful old colonial home!

6

Money talks, but at least the image has been kept un-MacDonalds like with the exception of a plastic clown on the seat.
I guess for me my view of MacDonalds is it's junk 100%. But I don't have a family and my childhood was never exposed to fastfoods as such. It is convenient and sometimes you need that when you're travelling.
It's like seeing Starbucks in China's Forbidden City thankfully the local residents protested on that one and Starbucks had to leave.
Good story Marina.

7

Pretty hilarious to see a life-sized clown hanging out in such a scenic place. Gotta wonder.

8

Wow…I very rarely go to Mickey D's (I think the last time we were there a few years ago, it was a really hot day and it was the only place we could get a couple of cold bottles of water–something else I don't buy a lot–to take on a hike)…but visiting this one to see it might be tempting.

I'll sometimes go when I travel to get something regional like a lobster roll out east.

9

At least it looks like old Ronald knows how to relax into a beautiful setting! Cool post Marina!

10

If ever a McDonald's looked good it is this one. I try to avoid McDonald's as much as I can and visits are only restricted to the few birthday parties that took place there!

11

This totally bums me out. Despite the fact that some fast food chains make a half-hearted attempt to preserve the culture when they open up in new areas (usually because they are forced to comply with local laws or building codes), the fact is that it does distract from the local culture. It also reinforces the fact that American pop culture can so easily dominate a region because corporations and marketing machines have the money to do so.

Uh – I guess you should have asked how I really feel :-)

12

Wow, that is the most beautiful fast food restaurant I have ever seen!!!

15

Thanks for stopping by my WW! I visited Antigua back in 1992. They certainly did not have a Mc Donalds back then!

Beautiful, beautiful city though.

16

Oh my goodness, that is kind of sad. I guess nothing can stop you if you've got enough cash. Happy WW !

17

Wow, what a nice difference from the usual McDonald's! :)

18

That's one nice McDonald's!

Happy WW & thanks for stopping by mine. I probably will make a lot of apple pies – I've already made two of them and may make more and freeze them.

Yum, nuggets and fries. I'd be all about it lol.

20

That looks beautiful. I've never been to Antigua.

And this is why I MUST visit Antigua! That is the most tranquil and gorgeous McDonald's I have ever laid my eyes on! LOL! Hope you're enjoying your weekend!
