Lago de Amatitlan gets little credit. The main reason is because Lago de Atitlan, in the western highlands, is the preferred lake hangout spot. However, if you’re spending some time around Guatemala City and have free time, I would jet over to this lake for a super afternoon.

My husband’s friend has a house right on the lake and lent it to us for New Year’s eve. We had the run of the place so we went nuts!

First we kayaked around the tranquil lake.

Then we lazed out on the dock enjoying the sun going down over the mountains.

But the best part, we chilled out in their outdoor jacuzzi that was naturally heated by the neighboring volcano as we looked out at the lake.

This was one of the best New Year’s of my life!

We’ve been trying to get an invitation back to the house, but it seems my husband’s friend’s grandparents have retired and moved in permanently.
