Highway Entertainment

By Marina K. Villatoro · Thursday, May 21st, 2009
Semana Santa (Holy Week) is so much more than a religious holiday for Central Americans. As a matter of fact, it’s similar to what we know as Spring Break but for adults, families and everything in between.  Cities empty out, beaches overflow and chaos emerges. But it’s also heaven if you don’t venture out with the rest of the crowd. I so prefer this quiet atmosphere and normally don’t leave my area fully enjoying the people-less living.

This year I had no choice, since my husband’s work gives him the week off  and we had to fly to Guatemala to figure out our living arrangements for when we move in July, we decided to take advantage and do some road tripping.

Funnily enough, if you JUST TAKE A ROAD TRIP TO NOWHERE you’ll have a blast! The highways are humming and buzzing with roadside entertainment.

It made absolutely no difference what different companies were advertising because you are too busy watching the beautiful, half-naked girls dancing to explosively loud music and blowing you kisses.

Our particular road trip took us through a toll booth. The party going on here was outta site. The product advertised was Brazilian something or other. Who really cared! They gave out free drinks while hot girls and beefed up guys danced to samba and threw confetti at the passing cars.

Besides these all out shows, we passed a dinky little driveway with more girls dancing. I had no idea what they were there for and asked my husband:

Me: “What’s this place?”
Hubby (eyes popping out of his head): “Who cares?”
Me: “Why would dancing girls motivate you to stop here?”
Hubby: “Because! You don’t pull over for the place, but to look. Once you’ve seen them, you’re outta here!”
Me: “So this line of advertising is pointless?”
Hubby: “Huh?”
I rest my point.

That’s too funny! If there’s no benefit to this kind of advertisement, why do companies do it? I wonder if the girls dance for free?

Hi Fly Girl,
It is really weird. The girls do get paid and a lot in comparison to Guatemalan wages. The entire stage and everything coming to it is fully decked out in the company’s name. So maybe when they see the logo in a store it some how registers and they make money like that!

Oh! Now that makes sense! It sounds like this kind of advertising is more effective than commericals.

I love the idea of rural roadside entertainment. Sonds rather fun. It must make driveing more fun, since you never know what’s around the next corner.

Interesting way to advertise something. I wouldn't pay too much attention to what's being advertised, just enjoy the site. It sounds like good fun.
