Photo Friday – La Aurora Zoo in Guatemala Will Suprise You
By ·I was truly surprised, in a good way, when we arrived to this central Guatemala City Zoo – La Aurora National Zoo.

The animal collection had all the Madagascar characters (giraffe, zebra, lion, hippo), Shakira (tigers) and Timon (meerkats). Anything after that was just plain bonus points for the zoo as far as my son was concerned. The cages were spacious, well managed and the animals seemed happy. At least they weren’t pacing back and forth ripping their hair out!

Oh, and they had a baby section we saw Simba (teeny weeny 3 week old lion cub).

Hi Adina,
You definitely will. It’s like the thing to do with kids there:)

I’m glad the animals weren’t pacing. There seems to be a lot of that at the SF Zoo… especially with the polar bears! One time, my son counted the steps of the polar bear as it paced and it was exactly the same back and forth, back and forth. Sad to watch!

Aren’t baby lions the cutest? ( Of course, your son is very cute too!
We saw baby lions when we did an over night African Safari in Sweden and loved them!

Just seeing the ‘zoo’ signage at the front entrance is interesting -a fun zoo with colorful flair!

Looks like a fun place and, like Lorraine, the colorful entrance caught my eye.
Good to hear the animals had some room to move. The Detroit Zoo is one of the forerunners here with large, open exhibits and famously gave up their elephants to a refuge a few years back (after a lengthy fight with the zoo accreditation org that didn’t want them to give the animals up and bring attention to the fact that most elephants need more room to roam then they’re allowed in zoos–the reason Detroit cited for sending the elephants to the refuge).
