The pressure’s on! I gotta pick the right school for my 5 year old before moving to Guatemala, or he might just have the worse adult life and I’ll be 100% to blame. Maybe not! But sometimes I certainly feel like if I send him to a school not worthy of our high and mighty American standards he just might be screwed. This is not me talking, by the way, these are the influences that I have to put up with.

To be honest, I’ve never believed in the school system. I think kids come out of there more f****d up then if they didn’t have to deal with the teacher’s point of view, falling into the right peer pressure groups and clics. My husband and I really really really considered homeschooling. But I simply have to face the facts! I HAVE NO PATIENCE WHATSOEVER. And what the hell am I going to teach my kid? I’m still learning myself. So, time to look for the right school.I did say that we will be moving to Antigua, which narrows my search tremendously. However, to be a good resource blog, and not to single anyone out. Plus, I did the research anyways, I’ve got a list of all the schools in Guatemala City that are on the top list and American accredited. You can also find more information about schools and other Guatemala educational facilities here.

Equity American School
Colegio Decroly Americano
Colegio Americano
Colegio Interamericano
Colegio Internacional Montessori
Colegio Maya
Colegio Ingles Americano
Colegio Evelyn Rogers
Colegio Valle Verde

Here’s the recommended schools of Antigua. The difference between these private schools and Guatemala‘s city are:

1. Prices. I don’t think you need to take out a second mortgage to send your kid here (but will tell you once I visit the schools, there’s always hidden costs.)
2. You don’t need to get on a waiting list with some of the most famous narco drug lords or request 2 parking spots for you child’s bodyguards.
3. They are not American accredited.

Here is the Antigua list:

Colegio Mundo Sesamo
Centro Educativo El Valle
Colegio Adventista Orion
Colegio Antigua
Colegio Belen
Colegio Bilingue Cinderella
Colegio Boston Bilingue
Colegio Mixto Integral Santiago
Colegio Mundo Verde
Colegio San Miguel
Colegio Santiago de Los Caballeros

As you can see there are a bunch to choose from, however, it’s never that simple!

For one, bilingual may sound great to us, but as my husband explains they have at most one hour of English a day and even that’s questionable.
Two, the majority of these schools are religious. Since we don’t fall into that category I’d say more than half of them come right off my list.
Three, there is no daycare for any of them. They all get out at noon. Not that I don’t think it’s great. But does no one work out there??? What do you do with your kids after noon?

Stay tuned for my meetings with the schools and my hunt for great activities to do with my son after NOON!
