Daily Costa Rica – Casado (Married Man)

By Marina K. Villatoro

This particular Casado is the typical Costa Rican meal. It’s called Married Man because this is what the wife serves her husband when they come home for lunch.

The usual dish includes a salad, plantains, rice, beans and a serving of either chicken, beef, pork or fish.

Yeah! I can leave comments now! Boy, do I know casados! When I first arrived to Costa Rica, I ate a casado everyday at a little soda close to my house – Soda Marlen (in Pavas). It was so good! I couldn’t speak a word of Spanish but Marlen would serve me up whatever she happened to be cooking that day. God bless that woman! Her food kept me sane that first month.

Dominicans have the same meal but it’s called bandera. It’s always a little too much for me but if you have a labor intensive job, I’m sure it’s just right!

Wow. Now that’s a full meal.
